Gender Reveal Gone Hilariously Wrong: Wisconsin Couple Shares Confusing Cake Moment
When you think of a gender reveal, you probably picture one of the happiest, most exciting moments in a couple’s life.
But for one Wisconsin pair, their big reveal turned into a colorful, hilarious, albeit confusing surprise that has now gone viral.
In a TikTok video that’s racked up more than 350,000 views, Meghan Ferris and her husband Matt Ferris, shared what they thought would be a sweet and simple way to learn their baby’s gender — by diving into a cake with champagne flutes.
“Final predictions?” Meghan asks her husband in the clip. “It’s a girl,” Matt confidently replies.
The two then clinked their glasses together and seemed ready to make the big cut. “Oh my God, I’m gonna throw up, I’m so nervous,” Meghan says. “This is our first kid, we gotta go in together,” Matt adds.
After a few moments to calm themselves down, they dove into the cake only to find a confusing swirl of several different collars.
“Oh my God, is it a girl?” Meghan asks hesitantly. “It’s a girl,” Matt declares — though no one seems quite sure why.
Comments flooded the video with genuine confusion about the reveal. One person wrote, “I thought it was twins got so confused with the two colors haha”. Another questioned, “wait how do they know it’s a girl?”
The pink frosting in between the layers of cake revealed the couple was expecting a girl.
Meghan later told TODAY, “The video was from our first, who was born in February 2024 — her name is Remy.” She added that they are expecting their second baby, a boy, due any day now.
The Ferrises explained that the hilarious mistake happened when they changed bakeries at the last minute.
“We were so eager to find out the gender that we didn’t want to wait another day,” Meghan said. “Simple Simon (a bakery in Appleton) was able to take the order and whip up a cake that same day.”
Unfortunately, their choice of “confetti cake” Matt’s favorite flavor led to some very mixed signals.
“We were both expecting a very obvious bright pink or bright blue,” Meghan admitted. “So when there were so many colors, we were both so confused until we found the faint, thin line of pink down the middle.”
She added with a laugh, “Honestly, Matt was so flustered that he said ‘confetti,’ not thinking about what it would look like!”
Still, this mixup won’t deter the couple from using the bakery again. “They are the best!” Meghan added. “We decided that we’re going to get Remy’s birthday cake from Simple Simon every year to remember the gender reveal.”
