In 1982, the Almeida family's pet tortoise, Manuela, disappeared without a trace.
At the time, the family's home was being renovated so the Almeida's assumed the land-dwelling turtle had slipped outside while construction crews were coming in and out. They thought the creature might have ended up in a forest near their home in Realengo, Brazil.
It turns out they were wrong!
Recently, Leonel Almeida passed away and when his kids returned to their childhood home to help clean out a cluttered, upstairs storage room, they found much more than their father's forgotten trinkets.
While son Leandro Almeida was making a trip to the dumpster, a neighbor asked him if he was intending to throw out the tortoise with the box.
"At that moment I was white and did not believe," Almeida told Globo TV.
We're sure the Almeida's, and especially Manuela, are thrilled to be reunited after more than 30 years apart!
