A 10-year-old boy named Jayden Fontenot is being hailed a hero after saving the lives of both his newborn brother and his mom, who didn’t realize she was in labor. Ashley Moreau was 34 weeks pregnant when she went to use the bathroom and her water broke unexpectedly.

Jayden ran next door to tell his grandma, who called 911. But when he returned home, he found his mother bleeding on the bathroom floor. His stepfather had already left for work, and the quick-thinking preteen realized the paramedics would likely not arrive in time to help. But nothing could prepare the duo for what happened next.

“When he got to the bathroom, he just took a deep breath and said, ‘Okay, Mom, just tell me what I need to do,’” Ashley said. “He didn’t look scared, he looked calm and brave and I said, ‘Okay, I’m going to tell you what to do and we need to get your brother out as fast as possible because he’s breech and he can’t breathe.’”

Jayden gently pulled the baby out by his legs, but soon realized that he wasn’t breathing. So he ran to the kitchen to grab a nasal aspirator to clear out his sibling’s nose. “I wasn’t even thinking, I was just amazed,” he said. “I didn’t know what was going on.” Thankfully, paramedics arrived shortly after and took the duo to the hospital.

“I am so proud of him,” Ashley said. “He is brave, he is strong, he is my hero. I’m just so proud of him. He saved me and his brother’s life.” Though the baby boy, named Dax, is still recovering at the hospital, he is expected to be released in a few days.

In the meantime, Jayden is being honored by the mayor of his city, Sulphur, LA, for his heroic actions. From now on, Aug. 11 will be known as “Jayden Fontenot Day”. What a story!
