Backstage in Miami with Albanian Model Elton Ilirjani: A Glimpse into the World of Fashion
Elton Ilirjani, better known by his stage name Hanko, is a rising star in the world of fashion. He has a legion of fans, over 12 million followers, and has carved a unique path for himself, navigating the often-challenging landscape of the fashion industry. He has walked for fashion designers in Seoul, Tokyo, New York, Paris and Milan fashion weeks, and recently walked the runway for Miami Swim Week, The Shows, with designer Ema Savahl.
His journey, from Albania to New York, offers a fascinating insight into the dedication, resilience, and ambition required to succeed in this competitive world of high fashion. is a mainstay on fashion runways across the world.
Elton says the magic happens backstage of a runway show. “The secret of the show is backstage,” he said. “We all get ready, get prepared, and we see who is going to be the leader of the runway–because everything should have a leader.”
For a 15 minute runway show, Elton says it’s roughly six hours of preparation backstage. “Of course, I have rituals every time I am backstage,” he saId. “I teach other models how to prepare, too.”
He stays hydrated, moisturizes his skin, eats well before the show and arrives on time. “Ideally, before a runway show, I should have slept well, I shouldn’t have had alcohol or have been tired,” said Elton. “Every time I walk onto the runway, I channel a more powerful energy. I have a protecting angel with me, because I believe that we are all led by protecting angels.”

Ilirjani’s journey is significant beyond his personal achievements. He represents a growing wave of Albanian talent breaking into the international fashion scene. His presence provides a platform for showcasing Albanian culture and aesthetics, contributing to a more diverse and inclusive fashion landscape. This is particularly relevant in a globalized industry where representation matters.
“I want to inspire other people, other models, young models, to not be afraid, to accept your body and don’t be body shamed,” said Elton. “Go on the runway and bring your attitude. Be fearless, show the power of your uniqueness and your authentic soul.”
Ilirjani’s story begins in Tirana, Albania. His early interest in fashion stemmed from a deep appreciation for the aesthetics and artistry inherent in the industry. Unlike many who embark on modeling careers with pre-existing connections, Ilirjani’s path was forged through sheer determination and a strong work ethic. He leveraged social media platforms, showcasing his unique style and charisma, to gain recognition and ultimately attract the attention of international designers.
Elton started modeling when he was 40 years old. Age is just a number. “I will never be size zero,” he said. “I will never accept somebody telling me what to do, because I brought my authentic energy to the runway and I succeeded.”
