Talking to an ex can sometimes be awkward, but what if you write a song about them and have them address it on social media? Just ask Ariana Grande!

The release of her latest single, “thank u, next,” has caused some stir online when she put her ex boyfriends on blast, more specifically former backup dancer Ricky Alvarez, who she dated back in 2015.

The song starts out addressing her famous ex lovers and why it didn’t work out between them: “Thought I’d end up with Sean / But he wasn’t a match / Wrote some songs about Ricky / Now I listen and laugh / Even almost got married / And for Pete I’m so thankful / Wish I could say ‘thank you’ to Malcom / ‘Cause he was an angel.” If you pay close attention, she only really threw shade at Ricky. Ouch! But it’s all good because like Ariana, Ricky is thankful for his ex, too.

Ricky shared his reaction to the song on his Instagram Story with a recording of himself looking surprised. Ariana then re-shared his Story and apologized. “HAHAHAHA IM SORRY U GOT THE WORST LINE @rickyrozay it was meant v lovingly,” she wrote over the post. Ricky then responded on his Story, expressing his gratitude and joking about the songs he inspired in the past. “Nothing but gratitude. thank u, next. (those songs are fire tho… you’re welcome),” he wrote. Ariana even revealed that her exes heard the song before it was released, so these two are for sure on good terms.

It looks like Ricky can’t catch a break, though. Prior to getting the worse line in his famous ex-girlfriend’s new hit song, Ricky was involved in the donut licking scandal three years ago. In case you don’t remember (but let’s be honest, how can we forget?), Ricky and Ariana, who were dating then, were hanging at a donut shop when all of a sudden they decided to lick the sweet treats that were on display for customers to buy. To make matters worse, the whole thing was caught on camera. Hmm, maybe it’s not so surprising he got the “worst line” in the song after all!
