“He knows the value of things. He was an addict for many, many years and he pulled himself out of it, and he’s been sober for 11, 12 years now… and he knows how many times he’s messed up and how many times he’s been really close to losing everything,” Kristen said tearfully on CBS’s Sunday Morning in 2016.

“If I had to sum it up in one word, it’s work. Not unlike your body, which won’t just stay in shape on its own volition, you really have to be maintaining the relationship, and it is work. And it’s often uncomfortable work, but it needs doing or we won’t stay together,” Dax told Today in 2017. “I think that we’ve all consumed a lot of fairytales and romantic comedies and sitcoms,” he continued. “In that architecture, it seems that your main job is just to select the right person, and I don’t really think that’s the main job. I think that’s maybe the least important aspect of it, truly. I think it’s far more about the work that goes into it to make it good.”

“It gets deeper and more solid and starts to contribute to other areas of my life. It’s like building a house. It takes a lot of work but once you have the house, you can now do work inside of it because it’s stable and supportive. The depth of our love has produced so many wonderful aspects and security,” Kristen expressed to InStyle in July.

“We have a very healthy marriage and we got there by doing therapy when we needed it, and constantly doing fierce moral inventories,” Kristen told People in 2017. “We both take responsibility when we are wrong, and I think it is easy to work with him because I married him, because I enjoy spending time with him, and I trust him.
