Everything We Know About the ‘Tangled’ Live-Action Movie — Who’s Playing Rapunzel, Flynn Ryder and More!

After bringing animated multiple classics like Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Lilo & Stitch to life, Disney is officially turning its attention to Tangled. The beloved 2010 film has long topped fans’ live-action wish lists, sparking years of dream casting and online debate. Now, the wait is finally paying off.

While Disney is still keeping some major details under wraps — including a trailer and official release date — the studio has begun slowly rolling out information about the project. From casting announcements to behind-the-scenes talent, here’s everything we know so far about the live-action Tangled movie.

When Will the Live-Action Tangled Movie Be Released?

The film is still in pre-production, meaning there’s no confirmed release date just yet. According to Deadline, Disney began assembling the creative team in 2024, and the first major cast announcements arrived at the start of 2026. Filming is expected to kick off later this year, which could put the movie on track for a theatrical release sometime in 2027.

Who’s Behind the Scenes?

Disney has enlisted some big names to bring Rapunzel’s story to life. The live-action Tangled will be directed by Michael Gracey, best known for helming the hit musical The Greatest Showman. The screenplay was written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, whose credits include Thor: Love and Thunder.

Why Was the Movie Briefly Paused?

The project hit a temporary pause as Disney reassessed its live-action remake strategy. Reports suggested the studio slowed development amid concerns over audience fatigue and mixed reactions to recent remakes — particularly the backlash surrounding Snow White. Ultimately, Disney chose to move forward with Tangled after reevaluating its creative direction and casting approach.

Who’s Playing Rapunzel and Flynn Rider?

On January 7, 2026, Disney finally revealed the film’s leading stars. Teagan Croft has been cast as Rapunzel, stepping into the role originally voiced by Mandy Moore. The Sydney-born actress is best known for playing Raven on DC’s Titans and has also appeared in True Spirit, Legends of Tomorrow and Women of a Certain Age.

Milo Manheim will star opposite her as Flynn Rider, the charming thief with a heart of gold. Fans may recognize the 24-year-old actor from Disney Channel’s Zombies franchise or his run on Dancing With the Stars in 2018. Zachary Levi voiced Flynn in the animated original.

Following the announcement, Milo shared his excitement on Instagram, writing, “Too grateful to put into words. I will do him justice, I promise.”

What About Mother Gothel?

Casting for the film’s villain hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but rumors have swirled. Scarlett Johansson was previously reported to be in talks to play Mother Gothel, Rapunzel’s manipulative captor. When asked about the role, the actress teased that “anything is possible,” leaving fans hopeful she may still join the cast.
