When it comes to decorating for the holidays, you need to ask yourself a few questions first: 1) How much money do I want to spend? 2) How much time do I want to take? 3) How much energy do I want to use?

If you’re a member of the Kar-Jenner family, for example, the answer to all three of those would be: The limit does not exist. Kris Jenner literally hand-crafted huge, customized gingerbread houses for each of her children. She has six of them, by the way.

While we no doubt appreciate Kris’ generous Christmas spirit, us average people simply can’t be doing all of that. As a result, we’ve compiled a handful of holiday decorating hacks that will save you time, energy and best of all, money, this season.

Candy Canes

Listen up, ladies and gentlemen, because candy canes should actually be your best friend around the holidays. You can use them for everything — and they’re cheap! They make quick and easy tree ornaments, as well as nice additions to wrapped presents (as pictured, you’re welcome). We know what you might be thinking: “No, candy canes are for eating.” And to that, we say … are they really, though? Candy canes are, like, OK-tasting at best.

Pine-Scented Air Freshener

Did we steal this from Pam on The Office? Maybe. But we also steal 99.9 percent of our jokes from The Office, too, so the point is moot. Instead of getting a real tree, just hide a couple of pine-scented air fresheners inside a fake one. It will smell like the real deal! Also, considering a fake tree is a one-time purchase and requires no clean up — ahem, no pine needles everywhere — it’s a win-win.

Cotton Balls

Chances are, you already have a bunch of cotton balls in your house. Honestly, nobody ever remembers buying cotton balls, they just appear, right? With that, you can repurpose them for some decorations! Well, basically, you can only use them to look like snow, but it’s better than going out and buying the fake snow blanket or spray. For example, if you want to create a cute little winter wonderland scene, first lay down a layer of cotton balls. You can keep them whole or pull them apart.

White Lights

Are colorful Christmas lights pretty? Yes. Should they be used after Christmas? No. White lights can stay up all year round, as far as we’re concerned. You’ll get more bang for your buck this way. Plus, they really do make a nice addition to any room.

Candles

If you’re feeling a little insecure about your holiday decorating skills, candles are your friend. If you can’t make your house look like Christmas, that’s OK! Just make it smell like Christmas.

Santa Hats

Similarly to cotton balls, you likely have Santa hats hidden all over your house. Instead of wearing them, you can actually repurpose them into Christmas stockings. Then, when you’re done opening presents, you can go back to putting it on your head!
