There were eight categories for film: Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Actor, Best Actress, Breakthrough Actor, Best Screenplay, the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award and the IFP Gotham Audience Award. In addition, television had two categories for Breakthrough Series — one was for programs under 40 minutes and the other was for those over 40 minutes.

The films that scored the most nominations were Marriage Story starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, The Last Black Man in San Francisco featuring Jimmie Fails, Jonathan Majors and Danny Glover, Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler and Idina Menzel and The Farewell starring Awkwafina.

There were a lot of major stars up for nominations. Awkwafina took home the prize for Best Actress. “Holy s—t. I never won anything. I can’t even win an argument in the Instagram comments,” she hilariously began in her acceptance speech. Although she seemed genuinely shocked by her win, she was sure to thank “grandmas everywhere, for spoiling us, loving us and believing in us.” Other nominees in the category included Florence Pugh (Midsommar), Mary Kay Place (Diane), Alfre Woodard (Clemency) and Elisabeth Moss (Her Smell).

As far as Best Actor, the list was equally impressive. Jennifer Lopez still hit the stage to present for the competitive category. The nominees were Adam Driver (Winner, Marriage Story), Aldis Hodge (Clemency), Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems), Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse) and Andre Holland (High Flying Bird). Hustlers was also nominated for Best Feature, but Marriage Story ended up winning the category.

All in all, it was a star-studded night to celebrate the biggest films of the year. Keep scrolling to see the red carpet photos!
