Grimes Stands Up For Selena Gomez Against Online Trolls: ‘She Looks Extremely Beautiful’
Since releasing her music video for her new song “In The Dark” on October 23, singer and actress Selena Gomez has been receiving backlash regarding her physical appearance online.
The music video shows Gomez in a series of all black ensembles, singing her heart out dramatically in various settings.
While Gomez is clearly giving the performance her all in the music video, people online had a lot to say about her appearance, in particular her face shape.
Many trolls online took to posting negative commentary, accusing her of having badly done or overdone cosmetic procedures.
On one such X post, which implied Gomez’s cosmetic work made her look like “an X Files monster of the week,” was the last straw for fellow singer Grimes.
“I’ve been in the internet for like 48 hours and despite minor benefits I might have to leave,” Grimes wrote in an October 25 response to the post. “Watched this Selena Gomez video, besides a few weird derp shots that ppl were able to clip and super misrepresent how she looks, she looks extremely beautiful, is prob one of the most beautiful girls.”
“How do you think little girls feel reading stuff like this about another woman?” she continued in the lengthy post, questioning the impact of such hateful comments.
She then went on to say these kinds of remarks are “high school level bullying,” before adding that people claiming Gomez’s face looks strange “is disturbing – in part because it’s not even true if you actually watch [the music] video.”
While Gomez has not commented on the current backlash or Grimes’ response, she is no stranger to receiving negative comments about her face and body.
Gomez has clarified in the past that most of the changes to her physical appearance over the years have happened because she has a chronic health condition called lupus, which can cause inflammation and weight fluctuations.
She has also clarified that she has gotten botox injections, but has not gotten any other cosmetic procedures.
