Katy Perry Claps Back at ‘Unhinged’ Haters Amid Blue Origin Space Flight Backlash: ‘I’m Not Perfect’
Katy Perry is clapping back at “unhinged” haters who criticized the all-female crew of the historic Blue Origin space flight to space earlier this month.
“My therapist said something years ago that has been a game changer, ‘No one can make you believe something about yourself that you don’t already believe about yourself,’ and if I ever do have any feelings about it then it’s an opportunity to investigate the feeling underneath it,” Katy, 40, wrote in a lengthy message posted to a fan account on Tuesday, April 29.
The “Teenage Dream” hitmaker called out the internet for treating her like a “human Piñata,” telling users that she took it with “grace and send them love.”
“Cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed,” she continued. “What’s real is seeing your faces every night, singing in unison, reading your notes, feeling your warmth. I find people to lock eyes and sing with and I know we are healing each other in a small way when I get to do that I’m not perfect, and I actually have omitted that word from my vocabulary.”
Katy’s heartfelt message to fans comes just weeks after she and her fellow Blue Origin crew members — TV personality Gayle King, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, former NASA engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn — faced backlash for their historic spaceflight on April 14. The group of women traveled to the Kármán line — the spot separating Earth’s atmosphere and space — 62 miles above the planet.

Both fans and celebrities questioned the cost of the women’s journey aboard the billionaire Amazon founder’s spacecraft and slammed the environmental impact of the expensive launch. Others mocked the use of glam squads to prepare the women for the mission, calling the pre-launch styling unnecessary and out of touch.
Before the flight took off, actress Olivia Munn made headlines when she questioned the need for the trip during an appearance on Today With Jenna and Friends.
“I know this probably isn’t the cool thing to say, but there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now,” the actress, 44, told viewers on April 3. “What are you guys gonna do up in space? What are you doing up there?”
She noted that space travel was a costly and outrageous endeavor compared to other issues, pointing out that the average American “can’t even afford eggs.”
“What’s the point? Is it historic that you guys are going on a ride? I think it’s a bit gluttonous,” she continued. “Space exploration was to further our knowledge and to help mankind. What are they gonna do up there that has made it better for us down here?”
Lauren, 55, who “brought the mission together” and organized the trip, according to Blue Origin’s website, was “fired up” by the criticism and responded to the backlash head on.
“I would love to have them come to Blue Origin and see the thousands of employees that don’t just work here but they put their heart and soul into this vehicle,” the journalist told People after the flight. “They love their work and they love the mission and it’s a big deal for them.”
