Kayla Nicole Says People Someday ‘Will Have to Stop’ Calling Her Travis Kelce’s Ex-Girlfriend
Kayla Nicole is over being referenced as Travis Kelce’s ex-girlfriend and is ready for the day that people “have to stop calling [her] someone’s ex.”
The sports journalist, 33, reflected on speaking freely about her past relationship with the NFL star, who is now in a romance with Taylor Swift, during an appearance on the “Second Wind” podcast on Tuesday, May 6.
“You sit down and you do an hour-long interview with someone, and the headline is maybe one sentence that you said. Yeah, I was heartbroken and devastated because I went through a breakup and that’s the headline,” Kayla told hosts Marion Jones and Suzanne Evans. “Like so-and-so’s ex is devastated still and she’s sad and she’s depressed. It’s like, damn, girl, did you listen to anything?”
Although Kayla took the chatter with “a grain of salt,” she reminded fans that “they’re going to have to just let it go.”
“Until then, I’m going to ride this off into the sunset,” the Special Forces alum continued. “I want you all to report on me and the things that I’m doing and not have any correlation or connection to someone in the past because really and truly at the end of the day, if I choose to share my story, it’s because I’m sharing it because I think that someone needs to hear it.”
Kayla has continued to gain a following through her job as a multimedia host and sports journalist. More eyes were on her when she dated Travis, 35, on-again, off-again between 2017 and 2022. However, she made headlines when she broke her silence on the three-time Super Bowl champion’s relationship with Taylor, 35.
“It’s always been really important for me to use my platform not to create division, but to elevate and unite women. Black women specifically,” Kayla said via Instagram in October 2023, before reciting a letter she penned.
“So, I prepared a letter and would like to share it with you today.”
She later addressed a “demoralizing and antiquated narrative,” stating, “You do not have to respond. Because there is power in your silence.”
Kayla addressed the hate she later received from Taylor’s fans the following year during an interview on Angel Reese’s podcast “Unapologetically Angel.”
“I’d be lying if I said that that level of hate and just, like, online chaos, doesn’t impact me. It does, even to this day,” Kayla admitted during the October 2024 episode. “You can go to my recent post and it will be people debating each other why I am worthless and I’ll never be a talented person, and I have no career.”
She concluded, “I think there’s something about that level of fame that attracts crazy people, and it’s unfortunate because I’ve never done anything to warrant that kind of backlash.”
Nonetheless, Kayla expressed her admiration for the Grammy-winning musician during a January episode of Special Forces.
“Going through a public breakup, just to be frank, it’s been overwhelming. I’ve never experienced anything like it,” she told costars Alana Blanchard and Kyla Pratt of her relationship with Travis, before noting that he has since moved on with Taylor.
“I really like, like, her,” Kayla said. “I think she’s very talented.”
