Six months after a shooter opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas, a couple who survived the attack announced their engagement. Mykenzie Lane said yes to a proposal from boyfriend Brandon Helmick, who used his body to protect her during the shooting.

Brandon popped the question on the beach with a heart full of rose petals and one stunning sparkler. “I had some idea but I still cried my eyes out,” Mykenzie told Fox News. “Our relationship has always meant the world to me. But when someone sacrifices their life for you, how could you ever get more reassurance than that?”

Brandon, 21, and Mykenzie, 22, were at the Jason Aldean concert when the shooting starting. Brandon used his body to shield his girlfriend from the bullets and carried her over his shoulder after she was shot in her left ankle. The couple eventually got to the hospital after jumping into an Uber together.

On Oct. 1, terrorist Stephen Paddock killed 58 and injured over 800 people at the music festival before took his own life inside the Mandalay Bay resort. Recently, Jason Aldean honored the victims as he accepted the Entertainer of the Year award at the ACMs. “It’s been a rough year,” he said. “I just wanna say thanks for everybody who reached out to us, who showed us love and support over the last six months. It meant the world to us. To my Route 91 people, you guys are in our hearts always. I love you guys.”

Today, Mykenzie and Brandon are moving on from the largest mass shooting in U.S. history — and are busy planning their wedding, which is scheduled for August 3. “Honestly, I’ve known he’d [always] have a special place in my heart,” she added. “So, I think some part of me always knew I’d want to end up with him.”
