Film Adaptation of Freida McFadden’s ‘The Housemaid’ Gets New Pre-Christmas Launch Date

Originally slated for a Christmas Day release, Lionsgate has moved up the timeline for the launch of their adaptation of Freida McFadden’s novel The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig. The film will now be released on December 19, the studio shared with Deadline.

Sydney Sweeney, who plays main character Millie, is no stranger to a successful pre-Christmas movie release. Anyone But You, her romcom alongside Glen Powell, was released on December 11, 2023 and eventually surpassed $200 million at the box office globally, according to Deadline.

The film will follow Millie, a young woman with a dark past, as she accepts a job as a live-in maid for wealthy married couple Nina and Andrew Winchester, played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar

At first, the job seems like a dream come true for someone in Millie’s situation, but things soon take a turn as the Winchesters’ behavior towards her becomes stranger and stranger over time. Millie soon realizes she is far from the only one in the house with dark secrets waiting to be revealed.

While the film’s new release date will put it up against the highly anticipated third installment of the Avatar series, Avatar: Fire and Ash, as well as The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, Lionsgate shared with Deadline that they are very happy with the film and seem confident in how it will perform.

While The Housemaid does not have an official age rating yet, given its categorization as a psychological thriller, its audience will likely skew older than Avatar and SpongeBob, giving it room to shine.

Lionsgate seems to agree and be anticipating heavy viewership from the 18-24 age group, given that they decided to move up the release date to the weekend before Christmas to encourage the home-from-college crowd to spread the word ahead of the holiday, according to Deadline.
