As fans remember Luke Perry for his iconic roles on Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale, those closest to him are focusing on the kind of person he was, especially how he was as a father to his two children, Jack and Sophie Perry.

While Luke may have loved acting, he loved spending time with his family away from the spotlight even more. “I just like it there,” he once told Us Weekly. “I like to fish with my kids. And we have animals there. I love the cows. And I love the quiet time in the woods. I’m a country boy at heart.”

He was known to have a close bond with both of his kids. On Sophie’s prom night, he made sure to take photos with her as a way to create ever-lasting memories. He was also their biggest fan. Luke often attended wrestling matches to root for his son, 21, from the stands. Days after he passed away on Monday, March 4, Sophie, 18, and Jack spoke on Instagram about their dad’s influence on their lives.

“A lot has happened in this past week for me. Everything is happening so fast,” Sophie began. “I made it back from Malawi just in time to be here with my family, and in the past 24 hours I have received an overwhelming amount of love and support,” she continued. “I cannot individually respond to the hundreds of beautiful and heartfelt messages, but I see them, and appreciate you all for sending positivity to my family and I.”

“I’m not really sure what to say or do in this situation, it’s something you aren’t ever given a lesson on how to handle, especially when it’s all happening in the public eye. So bare with me and know that I am grateful for all the love. Just, being grateful quietly,” she concluded.

A day later, Jack got candid about his experiences with his father. “He was a lot of things to a lot of people. To me, he was always Dad. He loved supported me in everything, and inspired me to be the best that I could possibly be,” he wrote. “I’ve learned so much from you, and my heart is broken thinking about everything you won’t be here for. I’ll miss you every day that I walk this earth. I’ll do whatever I can to carry on your legacy and make you proud. I love you Dad.”

Our thoughts are with Luke’s loved ones.
