Man Dresses as Dead Mother to Collect $60,000 Pension 3 Years After Her Death
An Italian man channeled his inner Mrs. Doubtfire by dressing up as his late mother to collect her $60,000 pension three years after her death.
The 56-year-old man, whose name has not been publicly shared, disguised himself as his mother, Graziella Dall’Oglio, by dressing in a blouse and skirt, lipstick and sporting a short brown wig. The man reportedly dressed up as his mother amid a scheme to collect her pension after she died in 2022, according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
The man previously worked as a nurse and is now unemployed, per the outlet. He never reported his mother’s death, while he continued to claim €53,000 – which is about $60,000 – of her survivor’s pension. The money came from her late husband, as well as income from the family’s real estate and land.
The scheme was discovered on November 16 when a registry office clerk in Borgo Virgilio noticed the man’s disguise when he came in to renew his mother’s identity card. The registry office clerk contacted Borgo Virgilio Mayor Francesco Aporti and the police, while Aporti told Corriere della Sera that an investigation was launched into the matter.
“She looked very much like the woman in the photo on the ID. But there was something that didn’t convince the employee, like the hair on her neck, the heavy makeup, and it looked like beard holes were protruding from the greasepaint,” Aporti said of the man’s disguise.
Aporti added that investigators “analyzed the video surveillance footage and saw the woman arrive in a car.” He continued, “Alarm bells ringing: the woman doesn’t have a driver’s license … piece by piece, the picture of this unpleasant situation began to emerge.”
The man was later called back to the registry office, where the mayor and police officers confronted him. The man then admitted to the disguise, explaining that the woman he was impersonating was his late mother.

Once he admitted to pretending to be his mother, the man allowed authorities to search his mother’s home. Aporti then told Corriere della Sera that they then found the “mummified body” of Graziella in the home.
“The woman may have died of natural causes, but the autopsy will probably determine that,” he said. “In any case, they had no financial problems … It’s a very, very sad story.”
The man is currently being investigated for concealing a corpse, fraud against state damages, impersonation and falsehood in public, according to La Repubblica.
