It sounds like Megyn Kelly‘s past feud with former Today host Matt Lauer may still be haunting her career. Sources close to the situation tell Life & Style exclusively that Matt did everything in his power to help oust Megyn from the morning show team, and now that she’s gone he’s hoping to weasel his way back in.

“Matt contacted his old cronies at NBC within minutes of Megyn’s catastrophic Oct. 23 blackface comments and had a hand in her show’s cancellation,” a source explained. “It’s sweet revenge for Matt after Megyn repeatedly criticized him and focused on his bad behavior. Now her scandal has taken the ‘most hated person in broadcasting’ spotlight off of him.”

“Matt hopes to get back on the air in some form at NBC,” said an insider, and it sounds like there’s a possibility that Matt might get his wish. While NBC still hasn’t announced who will be replacing Megyn permanently, a source said, “They’re still in discussions with some very exciting possibilities. Even Matt’s name has come up in whispered conversations.” Kathie Lee and Hoda also reportedly want in!

We can only imagine the backlash Today would get if they did opt to bring Matt back after his devastating sexual harassment allegations that cost him his job in 2017. But then again, Matt was their biggest star and Megyn never quite seemed to fit in with the others, who still seem to think more fondly of Matt.

Megyn, on the other hand, is clearly still on the bad side of her bosses after saying in a segment on Halloween costumes that she doesn’t understand why doing blackface for a costume is racist. Even when pushed by her guest hosts Melissa Rivers and Jenna Bush Hager, Megyn only doubled down. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there’s much she can do to change their minds, now.
