NBA Star Naz Reid’s Sister Toraya Reid Shot and Killed at 28 in New Jersey

Minnesota Timberwolves star Naz Reid’s older sister, Toraya Reid, was shot and killed in New Jersey.

Police officers in Jackson Township were called to an apartment building on Larsen Road at around 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said in a press release. Authorities found an unresponsive woman who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds near the entrance of the apartment complex. The woman was later identified as Toraya, who was 28 years old at the time of her death.

Additional officers responded to the scene and saw a man, who was later identified as Shaquille Green, running down a nearby street. Toraya and Green, 29, had been in a “dating relationship,” according to Billhimer.

“Green was taken into custody without incident and transported to Jackson Township Police Headquarters,” the prosecutor’s office wrote in the press release.

Green has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with Toraya’s death. He is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail as he awaits his detention hearing.

In addition to Naz, 26, Toraya also had a younger sister named Jakahya.

Naz is best known for his career in the NBA playing center/power forward for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He has been playing for the team since 2019, while he was previously a college athlete at Louisiana State University.

The professional athlete had a close bond with Toraya, and he previously told Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine that she was very protective of him.

“My older sister is super protective,” he said of Toraya during the 2023 interview. “She treats us like she’s our parent.”

Following her death, Naz took to his Instagram Stories on Sunday, September 7, to share a handful of throwback photos of Toraya. One snapshot showed the siblings wearing matching red outfits, and another captured Toraya smiling as she sat next to Naz.

Meanwhile, Jakahya took to Facebook to ask for privacy. She also admitted that she couldn’t believe the situation wasn’t “some kind of sick joke.”

“We always send our condolences and say we could never imagine ourselves in that situation… and yet here I am. Facing the unimaginable. Without you by my side,” she wrote, according to People.

She added in an additional post, “My sister has a name. She is not just some girl, she’s not just the NBA superstar sister. She has a name and that is Toraya Reid.”
