Even the most devoted Say Yes To The Dress fans are probably unaware that the TLC reality show once showcased three polygamists. In 2017, the popular wedding show made headlines after including a polyamorous throuple. Jennifer, her fiancé Peter, and Peter’s wife, Ellen all headed to Kleinfeld bridal salon in search of finding the perfect dress for Jennifer.

“Ellen had some serious health issues which put a strain on their marriage,” Jennifer explained during their episode. Peter added, “I never wanted to embarrass Ellen. and I never wanted people that don’t understand all of the details of our life, to know that I was lonely. This isn’t really religious-based. We were all Catholic, [this is] clearly pretty far from the religion in which we were raised.” Ellen added, “This was something that I kind of pushed. I wanted to be sure that he was okay.”

Talk about unconventional. Although, polyamorous marriages and open relationships aren’t completely out of the norm now. During the episode, Ellen explained how after giving birth to her first child with Peter, she began to develop Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. “One of my main symptoms was I could not deal with touch,” Ellen explained alongside Peter and Jennifer. “That, of course, affects intimacy and I had full recognition of that. I thought that was quite unfair to him, so I decided to let Peter have the option to be with someone else.”

While including the throuple was big news for the reality show, other shows like Sister Wives have been telling the story of the polygamous Brown family for years. Some viewers still found the relationship difficult to accept. “Family is watching Say Yes to the Dress. Woman is getting married to a polygamist family. The other wife is there. Talk about awkward,” one fan tweeted. Another added, “Watching Say Yes to the Dress and there’s a polygamist bride… so, her fiancé’s other wife is at the appointment… who tf does that.”

Say Yes to the Dress airs on Saturdays at 8 p.m. EST on TLC.
