Ruby Rose Slams Sydney Sweeney Over ‘Christy’: ‘You Ruined the Film’ Amid Political Backlash

Sydney Sweeney can’t seem to escape controversy lately — and this time, she’s facing harsh criticism from fellow actress Ruby Rose.

The Orange Is the New Black star, 39, took to Threads on Monday night to publicly slam Sydney, calling her a “cretin” and accusing her of “ruining” the new boxing biopic Christy. The movie, directed by David Michôd, hit theaters last Friday but stumbled out of the gate, earning just $1.3 million at the box office — one of the lowest openings of its kind.

Ruby claimed that Christy looked very different when she was first attached to the project.

“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry,” she wrote. “Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay,” she alleged, suggesting that the film’s direction changed drastically after Sydney took over the role.

In her post, she expressed disappointment on what she perceived as a missed opportunity to tell Christy’s story authentically. Without naming Sydney directly at first, she referenced recent PR statements defending the film’s poor box office turnout and accused the HBO actress of lacking connection to the material. “None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us,” Ruby wrote. “You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

The film tells the true story of boxing legend Christy Martin, who broke barriers in the male-dominated sport throughout the 1990s while surviving years of domestic abuse at the hands of her trainer and husband, Jim Martin. Christy later rebuilt her life and found love again with her former rival, Lisa Holewyne.

Ruby’s outburst appeared to be a direct response to Sydney’s Instagram post earlier in the week, where the Euphoria actress addressed the movie’s disappointing debut but stood by her work. “I am so deeply proud of this movie. Proud of the story we told. Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin,” Sydney wrote. “If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. So yes, I’m proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life.”

The online drama only adds to Sydney’s recent string of controversies. The Anyone But You actress came under fire earlier this year for her American Eagle ad campaign, which featured the slogan “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” — a play on words that some critics accused of having undertones of eugenics.

Sydney, 28, brushed off the backlash in a GQ interview, saying, “I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans.”
