Third time’s the charm? Scarlett Johansson is engaged to SNL star Colin Jost, but this will actually be her third walk down the aisle. The actress has been married twice before and shares her daughter with one of her ex-husbands. The Avengers star keeps her relationships very low-profile so it’s not often that you’ll catch her talking about her love life.

Let’s start at the beginning. Scarlett, 34, was married to Ryan Reynolds, 42, for three years. The duo got hitched in 2008 but fizzled out in 2011 with a very vague statement about why their relationship ended. “After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage. We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it,” their joint statement said at the time.

Although they seem like they would make a great pair, dating another industry pro proved too challenging for the Lucy star. “The logistics of being with another actor are challenging,” she reflected during an interview with Cosmopolitan in 2016. “There has to be a real understanding of how you share your time, especially when two people’s careers are going at the same rate. Or even if one person is more successful than the other, that also proves challenging. There may be a competitive thing.”

Although Ryan told Details magazine in 2011 that divorce causes “a lot of pain,” he took time to heal and tied the knot with Blake Lively in 2012.

As for the Don Jon actress, she eventually gave marriage another shot with French journalist Romain Dauriac, 37, in 2014 after welcoming their daughter, Rose Dorothy. Two years later, Scarlett filed for divorce in New York City, stating that their relationship was “irretrievably broken.”

Things got messy when Romain’s lawyer accused Scarlett of filing as a “preemptive strike” in the forthcoming custody battle. She released the following statement in response: “As a devoted mother and private person and with complete awareness that my daughter will one day be old enough to read the news about herself, I would only like to say that I will never, ever be commenting on the dissolution of my marriage. Out of respect for my desires as a parent and out of respect for all working moms, it is with kindness that I ask other parties involved and the media to do the same.” Their divorce was finalized in 2017.

Sometimes you have to figure out what you don’t want in order to find what you do want. One thing is for sure: Scarlett seems completely smitten over her current fiancé, Colin. Live and learn, right?
