‘Shogun’ Season 2: Everything We Know About the Release Date, Time Jump & New Cast!
There’s an enormous amount of anticipation surrounding Shōgun season 2 — and for good reason. The FX hit became one of the most talked-about dramas of the decade when it premiered in 2024, thanks to its breathtaking visuals, gripping political tension and powerhouse performances from Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. The series even made Emmy history, becoming the most-awarded single season of television ever. But now, as fans look ahead to “part two,” the stakes feel higher than ever.
Keep reading for everything we know about season 2 so far.
Is ‘Shōgun’ Really Returning for Season 2?
Yes — not only is it returning, but FX has revealed even bigger plans. “FX, Hulu and the Estate of James Clavell are working to extend the critically acclaimed global hit drama Shōgun, moving forward to develop the saga with two additional seasons of the drama series.”
Cocreator Justin Marks teased just how big the next chapter will be during a Disney+ originals preview at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, promising that season 2 will once again deliver emotional depth and sweeping spectacle. “Like the first season, I think part two is a really sweeping, beautiful and you’re never going to see a coming, entirely unexpected love story,” Marks told Variety. He added that the battle moments coming next are on a scale viewers have never seen, saying, “I don’t think you’ve ever seen anything like this kind of scale, this kind of tragedy and this kind of humanity.”
What Will ‘Shōgun’ Season 2 Be About?
Season 2 will reportedly jump forward a full decade, picking up after Lord Toranaga’s seemingly inevitable rise to power. Sanada — now also an executive producer — will return, along with Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne, the English pilot known as “The Anjin.”
Because the series is now moving beyond the events of James Clavell’s original novel, Marks and his cocreator (and wife) Rachel Kondo are working closely with Clavell’s daughter, Michaela, to ensure season 2 expands the story authentically. And according to star Hiroyuki Sanada, fans can expect big surprises: “There’s so many ideas coming, and we’re not just focused on season 2… You can never guess what’s going to happen.”
Who’s In ‘Shōgun’ Season 2?
A wave of new talent is joining the cast, including Japanese singer-actor Ren Meguro, who will play Kazutada. Other new faces include Asami Mizukawa, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Takaaki Enoki and Jun Kunimura. Returning favorites include Sanada, Jarvis, Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai and more.
When Does Season 2 of ‘Shōgun’ Come Out?
With production beginning in January 2026 — nearly two years after season 1’s April 2024 debut — fans will be waiting quite a while.
“This show is going to take us a little while to produce,” Marks told Variety. “We’re trying to use this jump as a way to come back to our characters again for the very first time, to see them, to see what’s changed in their lives over the course of the last 10 years, and to rediscover them.”
