Back in 2013 when Miley Cyrus started twerking on Robin Thicke at the VMAs, her performance sparked a fad amongst celebrities. Suddenly, the word "twerk" became a national vocabulary word as nerdy news anchors and out-of-touch talk show hosts tried to replicate the dance all while making the craze look even less cool than it already did. Twerking actually existed way before Miley, but hey, a fad is a fad. Celebrities were booty-poppin' left and right to be a part of the phenomenon. Unfortunately, what they failed to realize was that twerking is hard. And as soon as a celeb bounced out of their chair and attempted to "twerk," you could tell from the look of their panic-stricken eyes that they made a terrible, terrible mistake.

So how do you twerk?

First of all, twerking isn't just drawing your name in the air with your butt. There's a weird technique that goes into it, which is why professionals charge major bucks to teach them in classes. Your back is supposed to stay as still as possible while your butt has an up-and-down panic attack. It's hard — trust us, we've tried. Which is why we're going to go easy on these celebs. Hey, it happens to the best of us. Check out the gallery below to see celebs who still haven't figured out this whole twerking thing.
