Dubbed the most emotional and dramatic finale in Bachelor history, for the first time ever Chris Harrison was not pulling our leg. In fact, the last hour of Arie Luyendyk Jr.‘s season was delivered unedited and in real time to prove just how “raw” the emotions were — and there were plenty of tears from both Becca Kufrin and Lauren Burnham.

So, what happened on The Bachelor finale? In a nutshell, Arie broke up with Lauren B. in Peru and popped the question to Becca K., only to regret his decision just a few weeks later. The former race car driver then goes on to embarrass his ~winner~ on national television by blindsiding her and revealing he was still in love with Lauren. Confusing right? Keep scrolling for a complete breakdown of Arie’s gutwrenching finale.

Arie says goodbye to Lauren B.

The finale starts off traditionally enough, with Lauren B. exiting a car first — a sign that she is not going to receive the final rose. The blonde beauty expressed her deep feelings for Arie — and thanked him for breaking down her walls — before he revealed she would not be getting a proposal. “Last night I was awake all night thinking about this moment and I wanted it so bad for us but there was something that was holding me back and I can’t go through with it,” Arie confessed. “And it’s not anything I can explain other than I gave it everything I had to see if it could work. I did fall in love with you.”

Arie went on to confess that he felt like a “monster” for breaking Lauren’s heart without a valid explanation. “I feel betrayed. How could you do that to somebody? I don’t get it,” an obviously confused Lauren told cameras between tears. “He just completely blindsided me. I let my guard down, I let someone in and it still didn’t work out. I wholeheartedly believed that he was gonna be the one. I was wrong… How could he get down on one knee if you weren’t sure until three hours ago? I really do think he made a mistake. I feel like he chose an easy route.” Enter Becca.

Arie proposes to Becca K.

After pulling himself together, Arie stands up to receive Becca and pop the question! And Becca was extremely confident about her relationship with the 36-year-old going into the final rose ceremony. “We’re just two pieces of a puzzle that just fit. It’s just easy and it feels right,” she gushed.

And it looked like Arie agreed. “When I met you I was taken aback. You are beautiful and elegant. In our first conversation, I knew you were an incredible woman and I needed to know more… We’re a team,” he said before getting down on one knee. “I’m very lucky that you’ve been on this journey with me and through all of it you’ve given me so much confidence along the way. Because of that, my love for you is immeasurable… Becca, will you marry me?”

Becca goes on to accept his proposal, and they live happily ever after right? Not so fast.

Arie reveals he’s made a mistake.

Fast forward a few weeks, and Arie admits he is still not over Lauren B. — and that he has to “follow his heart.” Right…

“I go to bed and I think about Lauren and I wake up and think about Lauren. She sees the fact that my mind’s somewhere else,” he told cameras. “[Becca] knows that I think about Lauren. I thought the feelings of this breakup would go away but they didn’t. With Becca I just feel an immense amount of guilt — it’s not fair to her to be in a relationship where someone’s half in. I have to follow my heart. Just thinking about the possibility of something with Lauren is making me want to risk it all because I really feel like I made a mistake.”

So, what’s the best way to call off your engagement? Blindside your fiancée on national television, of course!

Becca flies to LA thinking she is meeting Arie for a secret couple’s getaway — but quickly discovers they are there for a completely different reason. “How do I start this conversation?” Arie asks in the emotional scene, which was aired unedited and with a split screen so viewers can see both their reactions in real time.

“You know that I’ve been struggling a little bit and I think over the last couple times we’ve been hanging out I’ve been really trying to sort my feelings out… and the reality of it is that being with you, I still think about her,” Arie explained to a completely shocked Becca. “I think you sense that. And I think the more I hung out with you, the more I felt like I was losing the possibility of reconciling things with Lauren.”

While we do credit Arie for being somewhat honest with Becca about his conflicted feelings, it’s still hard to watch. “Well, I hope you find what you want. It’s clearly not me,” Becca finally responded, which was followed by a long awkward silence. “I’m done.” Arie went on to plead his case, but Becca kept her distance and broke down in tears in the bathroom.

How is Becca today?

The brunette beauty stepped out on the After the Final Rose stage alongside Chris Harrison, and described the experience as “brutal.” When asked by the host how she felt watching her breakup play out in front of millions, Becca revealed she was still dealing with the heartbreak.

“When it all happened I feel like I kind of blacked out and so much was going through my mind I couldn’t even focus on what I wanted to say,” she explained. “Of course, I had feelings for him, and I loved him. It was a hard heartbreak.” She also admitted that she has had zero contact with Arie since their split. “After he left, I went through all the emotions. I cried for four days straight and grieved the loss of that relationship and the future I thought we were going to have,” she added. “I feel betrayed a lot of the time because I feel like I was lied to for so long.”

Bachelor Nation will have to tune into part two of the After the Final Rose special tomorrow night at 8 p.m. on ABC to see Becca confront her ex, and find out if Lauren B. takes Arie back!
