Ken Doll’s Real Name Revealed Decades Later as He Celebrates 65 Years

After 65 years in Barbie’s orbit, Ken is finally stepping into the spotlight — and fans are just now learning his full government name.

As Mattel’s iconic Ken doll turns 65 this March, the brand is celebrating the milestone by pulling back the curtain on the character’s history, including a detail that may surprise even longtime Barbie fans: Ken’s full, official name is Kenneth Sean Carson.

Yes, really.

The reveal comes as Ken enters what Mattel is calling a brand-new era. In an Instagram post shared on Monday, January 26, the company teased that after more than six decades as Barbie’s on-again, off-again partner, Ken is ready to branch out. As the post put it, he “needs to see what else is out there.”

From being Barbie’s original dream guy to being brought to life by Ryan Gosling in 2023’s Barbie, Ken has worn many hats — literally and figuratively — over the years. But his roots go all the way back to Mattel’s founding family. According to Time, Ken was named after Kenneth Handler, the son of Mattel co-founders Ruth Handler and Elliot Handler. Barbie, of course, was inspired by Ruth’s daughter, Barbara.

Ken first hit store shelves in March 1961, two years after Barbie made her debut. At the time, Mattel positioned him as the perfect teenage boyfriend. A 1961 ad for the doll declared, “It all started at the dance. Barbie, the famous teenage fashion model doll by Mattel, felt that this was to be a special night. And then it happened. She met Ken, and somehow she knew that she and Ken would be going together.”

The voiceover continued, “So now, Mattel brings you Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend, with a complete wardrobe of perfectly tailored clothes of unmatched quality. Now, Ken and Barbie meet for lunch at school, go to fraternity parties and just relax together.” The ad famously featured Ken in swim trunks, casually draped with a towel — very Malibu-coded.

Interestingly, the real Kenneth Handler didn’t exactly see himself reflected in the doll. In a 1989 interview with the Los Angeles Times, he pointed out the contrast. “Ken doll is Malibu. He goes to the beach and surfs. He is all these perfect American things,” he said. Kenneth, who later worked as a real estate investor in New York City, described his own teenage years very differently. “I played the piano and went to movies with subtitles,” he said, adding, “I was a nerd — a real nerd. All the girls thought I was a jerk.”

Over the decades, Barbie and Ken’s fictional relationship has had plenty of twists. After 43 years together, the couple famously broke up in 2004, with Barbie briefly linked to Blaine, an Australian surfer doll. The two later rekindled their romance in 2011 while filming Toy Story 3.

Now, Ken appears to be stepping out on his own once again. In a recent status update, Mattel wrote, “After 65 years, Ken’s ready to explore a new era by trying 65 new things. Where should he begin?”

In an emotional video shared by the brand, Ken is seen saying goodbye to the ocean. “Don’t be salty. It’s not forever. We’ll stay in touch. Send a wave,” he says, before encouraging himself, “Don’t look back,” as he turns away.
