Where Is Season 4 of ‘The White Lotus’? Everything We Know About Filming Location
Season 3 of The White Lotus just came to a shocking end, and fans are already anxious to learn where season 4 of the HBO series will take place. While the exact season 4 location hasn’t been confirmed, creator Mike White has teased possible locations for the next murder mystery.
Where Is Season 4 of ‘The White Lotus’?
The location for season 4 has not yet been confirmed, though Mike hinted that the next season may take place in a cooler climate.
“For the fourth season, I want to get a little bit out of the ‘crashing waves against rocks’ vernacular,” he said in a YouTube video shared by HBO after the season 3 finale aired on April 6, 2025. “But there’s always room for more murders at the White Lotus hotels.”
Mike hinted at the season 4 location after rumors circulated that the upcoming season may take place in a Scandinavian country. Executive producer David Bernad shut down the speculation, stating that Mike wasn’t a fan of cold climates and likely wouldn’t want to film in the cold.
“Mike does not like the cold, that is why we will never do it. I feel confident we will never do a season in the cold … Mike is not for it. He is a California guy. He is not built for the cold,” he said while appearing on an episode of “The Bill Simmons Podcast.” “Never say never, but I would be surprised. I think one of the best parts of my job now is hotels are calling me. I get the run-off. Mike says, ‘No’ … I am telling you every hotel is offering to fly us to see the hotel.”
Another fan theory about season 4’s location is that it could be set in Australia. “Going down under has been on White’s radar,” Mike previously said during Sydney’s Vivid festival in 2023. “We kind of have to come to Australia if we keep going.”
Where Did the First 3 Seasons of ‘The White Lotus’ Take Place?
All three seasons of The White Lotus have taken place at different fictional White Lotus hotels around the world. Season 1 was set in Hawaii, while season 2 was in Sicily. The third season was set in Thailand, meaning that all three of the first seasons took place in warm climates.
Mike White Initially Didn’t Want to Film ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 in Thailand
Mike revealed he originally wanted to shoot season 3 in a different Asian country. “I wanted to shoot in Japan. I was in Thailand when my dad and I got eliminated from The Amazing Race — two weeks in an elimination station with all these other bitter reality contestants, I was just like, ‘I don’t ever want to come back here.’ But HBO was really pushing it because Thailand had good tax incentives,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in April 2025. “As an artist, your knee-jerk reaction is, ‘I’m not doing that!’”
Despite his hesitations, Mike and the crew traveled to Thailand to scope out the possibility of filming there. “I got really sick with bronchitis. They put me on a nebulizer. It was like I’d smoked crack — not that I’ve smoked crack,” he recalled of the trip. “For two days, I did not sleep. I was just lying in a hospital bed [in Chiang Mai], trying to think about what the show was, and it came to me.”
“I’ve dabbled in Buddhism, and Thailand worked for the themes that I was trying to get into. The show is about identity and desire — and then there’s another part of me, the mischievous gay part, that’s just like, ‘How do I create something that’s dirty and funny?’” Mike continued about his vision for the show. “It’s amusing to me when people approach the show in this very literal way, like the show is about incest. I’m glad we found you, but you’re not really the audience.”
