K-Pop Demon Hunters is currently the No. 1 movie on Netflix, and we only have one question: who is Rumi’s dad?! The animated hit follows Rumi, a K-pop idol-slash-demon slayer whose voice has the power to destroy evil — literally. But beneath the glam and glitter, she’s hiding one major secret: she’s half demon herself. So, who’s her mysterious father? Fans have theories, and some of them are seriously compelling.
Has Rumi’s Dad Been Revealed?
Short answer? Nope.
We do know that Rumi’s dad was a demon — which explains the purple markings on her skin. But his actual identity remains a total mystery.
For context: Rumi is a member of Huntrix, a girl group of idols-turned-demon-hunters. Alongside bandmates Mira and Zoey, she’s been fighting back against Gwi-Ma, a terrifying demon king, and his minions. Things get complicated when Gwi-Ma sends the Saja Boys — a demon boy band, obviously — to steal Huntrix’s fans and weaken the Honmoon, the spiritual force protecting humanity.
When viewers spot the same purple patterns on Rumi’s skin that the demons have, her lineage becomes a major plot point. A flashback reveals that her mother was a former demon hunter who died when Rumi was just a baby. Afterward, Rumi was adopted by Celine, her mom’s fellow demon-slaying BFF.
Here Comes the Fan Theories
With the film keeping things vague, fans have stepped in to fill the blanks — and honestly, some of these theories deserve their own spin-offs.
One Reddit user took a poetic approach, writing:
“I think that Rumi’s father may be none other than Gwi-Ma… It was a Hades and Persephone situation with Hina [Rumi’s mom] and Gwi-Ma’s relationship. She fell in love with the demon king himself and had his child… Knowing she could run, she made a deal with Gwi-Ma: let her leave to the human realm to give birth, and then her soul would belong to him.”
According to the theory, Rumi was born into the human world and raised as a hunter — making her immune to her demon father’s control. Honestly? If this ends up being canon, we need a *whole* prequel.
Another fan wrote: “My theory is that Gwi-Ma has a son… That son is Rumi’s dad.”
Whether Rumi’s dad is Gwi-Ma, Gwi-Ma’s son, or someone else entirely, Netflix needs to greenlight a sequel, stat. We’ve got theories, we’ve got questions — and we’re not letting this mystery go any time soon.
