Here’s Why Angelina Jolie Has Plans to Leave America After Brad Pitt Divorce Settlement
Angelina Jolie is allegedly ready to leave Los Angeles for good — and she may start by selling her historic estate.
The Maria star, 50, is reportedly “planning to put the house up for sale” as she explores a move abroad, a source told People on August 11. Page Six was first to report the news.
A source claimed that Jolie “never wanted to live in L.A. full time. She didn’t have a choice because of the custody arrangement with Brad,” referring to her ex-husband Brad Pitt, 61. The former couple shares six children — Maddox, 24, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 17.
The actors split in 2016 and waged an eight-year legal battle over custody and assets. Their divorce settlement was finalized in December 2024, though the pair reportedly remain in negotiations over their $500 million French winery, Château Miraval.
Sources say Jolie allegedly plans to relocate “as soon as” Knox and Vivienne turn 18. “She’s eyeing several locations abroad. She’ll be very happy when she’s able to leave Los Angeles,” the insider added. Another source described her L.A. home as “a historic masterpiece and truly such a beautiful estate,” noting Jolie may sell the property after making some minor improvements.
The actress purchased the sprawling 1913-built estate in 2017 for $24.5 million, according to People at the time. The home features six bedrooms and ten bathrooms across 11,000 square feet. Its Hollywood history adds to its allure: director Cecil B. DeMille bought the property in 1916 for under $28,000, and Charlie Chaplin lived nearby before DeMille combined the two estates.
Jolie previously explained why she stayed in Los Angeles despite wanting to leave. In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said, “When you have a big family, you want them to have privacy, peace, safety. I have a house now to raise my children, but sometimes this place can be … that humanity that I found across the world is not what I grew up with here.”
She added that after leaving L.A., she plans to spend time in Cambodia, where she adopted her oldest son Maddox in 2002. “I’ll spend time visiting my family members wherever they may be in the world,” Jolie said, previously sharing that Cambodia is the one place “in my heart” that she considers her home during a conversation at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February.
