<p><span></span>Sometimes it's not a good thing to mix business with friendship -- and <a href="http://dynamic.bauerpublishing.com/mt-search.fcgi?blog_id=2&tag=simon%20cowell&limit=20&IncludeBlogs=2"><strong>Simon Cowell</strong></a> is learning just that. <em>Life & Style</em> can exclusively reveal that Simon and <strong>Cheryl Cole</strong> have not spoken ever since he fired Cheryl from her position as a judge in the U.S. version of <a href="http://dynamic.bauerpublishing.com/mt-search.fcgi?blog_id=2&tag=x%20factor&limit=20&IncludeBlogs=2"><em>The X Factor</em></a>. "No [I haven't spoken with Cheryl]; we have texted," Simon revealed to <em>Life & Style</em> during the <em>X Factor</em> junket at the London Hotel in LA on July 29.</p>
On May 5, it was announced that Cheryl, 28, would be trekking overseas to appear as a judge alongside Simon, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul on the upcoming first season of the American version of The X Factor. Just three weeks later, though, Cheryl was fired from the show and replaced with American pop star Nicole Scherzinger, who stepped out of a hosting gig on the show to fill the vacated judge's seat.
Simon, 51, admits he's sorry about the outcome, especially because he and Cheryl have been friends and co-workers for years (she worked alongside him for three years as a judge on the U.K. version of The X Factor). "I am sorry the way it worked out as we were incredibly close," Simon told Life & Style. "Trying to get her to understand what I did, it was never meant to be negative. It was a decision I thought was the right one, and I think she is more comfortable in England than I saw her here."
And the former American Idol judge has second-guessed himself with his decision ever since. "Maybe I didn't give her enough time, and you have to be in the moment," he revealed to Life & Style. "I offered her the show, and initially she accepted it. Then it went public that she didn't and had the chance to still come back, but for whatever reason I couldn't get her [on the phone]. Unless I spoke to her, there was no way I would have her back."
Although the two are still not on good terms, Simon believes their friendship will overcome their current issues. "She is still grumpy with me," Simon said. "I can look myself in the mirror and say I wasn't being mean. I offered her a lot of money to go back as a hero, and it didn't work out. I think when you have the history we have, you'll eventually work it out."
The X Factor premieres on Wednesday, September 21 (8 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and Thursday, September 22 (8 p.m. - 10 p.m.) on FOX.
