Donatella Versace has been at the forefront of the fashion world since 1997 when she became the creative director of Versace following brother Gianni Versace’s death.

Just as the luxury fashion brand has evolved through the years, so has Donatella, who famously underwent a major transformation in her face before announcing that she is stepping down as the head of Versace to become its global ambassador.

Though she hasn’t gone into specifics regarding plastic surgery procedures, the fashion designer admitted at the Vogue Festival in 2013 that she’s “not like this genetically.” She also said that she’s had Botox, but explained that it was “only on my face, not on my body. That’s the result of hard work.”

1978

Versace was founded by Gianni Versace in 1978, and he tapped Donatella to be the brand’s vice president.

1996

Donatella took over as Versace’s creative director in 1997 after Gianni’s murder.

2005

Donatella struggled on and off with drug use for 18 years, explaining to U.S. Vogue in 2005 that she entered rehab after an intervention from Elton John. “I’m very determined that I don’t want to feel that way again,” she said at the time.

2010

While Donatella has become known for the changes in her face, she’s also known for her blonde hair — which isn’t natural. The businesswoman once said that she’s not a fan of the “natural” look on women.

“I don’t even know what my natural color is. Natural? What is natural? What is that? I do not believe in totally natural for women. For me, natural has something to do with vegetables,” she joked.

2015

Amid speculation about her puffier face, Donatella said at the 2013 Vogue Festival, “I’m not like this genetically.” She has also admitted to getting Botox in her face.

2025

In March 2025, Donatella stepped down as Versace’s chief creative officer and became the brand’s chief brand ambassador. Miu Miu’s former design and image director, Dario Vitale, will become Versace’s new creative director on April 1, 2025.
