How Much Has ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ Earned Mariah Carey? Details on the Holiday Hit

It didn’t take long for Mariah Carey to come up with the Christmas classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” but it’s the song that keeps on giving year after year. Since its release in 1994, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has continued to top the charts during the holiday season.

The holiday bop has generated around $80 million overall for Mariah in royalties, according to Celebrity Net Worth. The site added that on the “low end,” the song earns the mom of two approximately $600,000 but during a good year, that total could reach up to $1.2 million.

Mariah Carey Had a Vision for ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’

Mariah has opened up about “All I Want for Christmas Is You” in the past, and she’s given fans some behind-the-scenes thoughts on what she hoped to create.

“I was working on it by myself … on this little Casio keyboard and writing down words and thinking about, ‘What do I think of at Christmas? What do I love? What do I want? What do I dream of?'” Mariah told ABC News’ Juju Chang in November 2023. “And that’s what started it. My goal was to do something timeless, so it didn’t feel like the ’90s, which is when I wrote it.”

Over the years, rumors have circulated that Mariah whipped up “All I Want for Christmas Is You” in a mind-boggling 15 minutes, but the “Fantasy” artist said that wasn’t exactly the case. The song came together after she had an idea in mind and then got together with her then-writing partner, Walter Afanasieff.

“We did take some time doing the record, because if you listen to all those background vocals and all that stuff, you can’t do it in five minutes,” the Glitter star told Parade in 2021. “It’s literally impossible unless you have three choirs. So, no, it wasn’t five minutes to get the whole record done. But it was quick considering I’ve taken longer on songs.”

While the lack of the aforementioned choirs posed a problem, Mariah came up with a way to achieve the sound without the help of anyone else’s vocals.

“I did some stacks of myself on that one because it was inspired by Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound formula, where you’ll hear backup singers, but a lot of time it was Ronnie Spector,” Mariah told the outlet at the time. “I felt he had an effect. I don’t want to speak out of turn about this but that’s kind of a hot topic anyway to discuss. I feel like it was a lot of her doubling her, and that was new in that era. So, for me, I did a lot of those. I wouldn’t do it probably today in terms of those loud doubles, but it makes the song what it is.”
