Jeremy Allen White ‘Pulling Back’ Due to Awards Attention: He’s ‘Struggling to Get a Grip on Things’

Jeremy Allen White has Hollywood execs at his feet after his recent success at FX, and he’s a pretty popular figure with his peers, too, but he’s still extremely shy and aloof in his private life, according to a source, who exclusively tells Life & Style he still finds the spotlight tough to deal with behind the scenes.

“I’m not claiming to be inside Jeremy’s head but I do know the guy,” says a friend of the breakout Shameless alum, “I admire the hell out of him, and the more famous he gets, the more I, and everybody who knows him, see him struggling to keep a grip on things and even just do the bare minimum socially.”

“To put it another way, if, ten years from now, Jeremy has totally withdrawn from public life and just works once every couple of years, I wouldn’t be surprised at all,” the insider adds.

Jeremy, 33, has been cultivating a mystique around the flakiness of an artistic temperament lately. He won big time at the Golden Globes for his work in The Bear, though he failed to attend the awards and collect the accolade and the deserved admiration of his peers.

With his next big project, Deliver Me From Nowhere, Jeremy is diving headfirst into the mercurial world of rock legend Bruce Springsteen during a particularly dark period in his life. It’s the sort of role, along with his performance as Kerry Von Erich in The Iron Claw, that’s shaping him into a serious force to be reckoned with in the industry as well as a bona fide talent and serious artist.

“If he heads in that Marlon Brando direction, and shuts himself off from the world almost entirely, well, that’s his right and people totally get why he would do something like that,” the source continues. “He loves acting, he’s great at it, but he’s also made dozens and dozens of hours of shows and movies at this point and he’s found the most success when he pushes himself physically to the absolute limits – and beyond.”

“He did that as a young cast member on Shameless, he does that on The Bear because he needs his body to look a certain way in his famous white t-shirt on that show, and he did it on The Iron Claw to look like a 100 percent convincing retro wrestler.”

Assuming Jeremy will keep with his method acting approach, the insider adds, “I’m sure he’s doing that now as he works on his Bruce Springsteen movie, but please understand that he has totally shut himself off from the world to make that film and you’re starting to see this pattern of him radically pulling back from all the attention he’s getting.”

But apparently quickly becoming a recluse doesn’t exactly hurt a career.

“He’s constantly getting amazing offers, but he’s letting his team manage all that and the other trappings of fame have zero appeal to him – the crazy part is, that’s only going to make him more famous.”
