From Coparents to Loving Spouses! John Mulaney and Olivia Munn ‘Have What They’ve Always Wanted’
John Mulaney and Olivia Munn may be happily married now, but in the newest issue of GQ, the actress, 44, admits that she barely knew the comedian, 42, when she found out that she was expecting their son, Malcolm, in 2021.
“It wasn’t necessarily, ‘We’re going to be married and live together’ or any of that,” Olivia recalls of John’s excitement over the pregnancy. “But it was ‘I’ll be involved in some way.’”
At the time, he had just gotten out of rehab following a highly publicized relapse. “I was watching someone newly sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him,” says Olivia.
The Saturday Night Live alum has been open about his struggles with addiction in the past. He said he began drinking at just 13 “for attention,” which spiraled into substance abuse issues that would come to include cocaine and the opioid Vicodin.
“John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work,” a rep for John told Page Six back when he entered rehab.
When the comedian agreed to go in 2020, Olivia sent him some love, writing, “Sending SO MUCH love and support to John Mulaney. You got this,” on Twitter.
Around that time, John also decided to pull the plug on his six-year marriage to Anna Marie Tendler. In her own statement her rep gave to People, Anna said, “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”
While they never gave an official reason for the split, just a few days later, an insider confirmed to People that John and Oliva were “taking it slow.”

While it was never their intention for them to get together after John sorted out his sobriety, The Newsroom actress’ affection for her baby daddy grew and they decided to give it a go – on some conditions. About six months into her pregnancy, she staged a mini intervention for the SNL writer and he agreed to be drug-tested at random, which he still submits to to this day.
After proving he could be a stable and reliable father and partner, the two got together officially about two months before Olivia gave birth.
“I went to rehab in September, I got out in October, I moved out of my home from my ex wife … Then in the spring I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia,” John said on a September 2021 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
“I got into this relationship that’s been really beautiful with someone incredible. And we’re having a baby together. I was nervous when I was about to say the news!”
About their decision to finally get together, a source exclusively told Life & Style, “They’re so happy they did.”
The couple tied the knot in July 2024 and welcomed their second child, daughter Méi, in September.
“Now, they both have what they’ve always wanted: a family and someone to share their life with.”
