Kevin Costner’s ‘Yellowstone’ Costar Kelly Reilly Supported ‘His Dream’ to Leave Show for ‘Horizon’
Kevin Costner was ghosted by a lot of his Yellowstone costars after his departure, but not Kelly Reilly, according to a source, who exclusively tells Life & Style the actress has been supporting him the entire time and they do still talk on the down low.
Kevin, 69, who played family patriarch John Dutton on the hit series, announced he wouldn’t be returning for the second half of the fifth season, which showrunners had split into 5a and 5b. The decision to split the season conflicted with the actor’s Horizon filming schedule and caused a major rift between him and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan.
Opposite the Waterworld star was Kelly, 47, who played John Dutton’s daughter, Beth Dutton. According to the source, the two “had a great rapport on set and shared many scenes that seemed to bring them closer as actors, and they continue to bond.”
The friendship was born of the veteran actor’s respect for Kelly, which inspired a good deal of loyalty between the two performers. “Kevin was blown away by her ability to nail her character down,” the source says, adding that, while Kevin had taken on a paternal role behind the scenes similar to his on-screen character, Kelly “didn’t need his advice.”
After negotiations for Kevin to return and film season 5b fell apart, showrunners announced there would be no season six, which, according to the source, left many of the cast and crew giving Kevin the cold shoulder, but not Kelly.
“When everything hit the fan with Paramount and the producers, Kelly refused to comment publicly,” the source says, “but Kevin knew where she stood – with him.”

As far as gambles go, Kevin may not have made the most profitable decision to ditch his role on the high-rated show in favor of going out on his own to film and release his passion project, the four-part movie series Horizon.
As Life & Style previously reported, the actor is looking at a grim financial forecast considering the losses from the movie. The Oscar winner apparently poured $38 million of his own money into the project, which, when combined with the $63,000 per month in child support paid to ex wife Christine Baumgartner, means he may have to unwind a considerable portion of his real estate wealth. A second source previously said the Dances with Wolves star “banked Horizon largely, but not entirely, on undeveloped California land he owns, and reality is starting to set in that he’s likely going to have to part with this real estate and also reshuffle his other holdings to remain solvent after the disappointing showing of the first film in this saga.”
Despite the dreary outlook for the subsequent three movies’ box office results considering the flop of the first part, the first source says that, while “Kelly missed working with him,” on Yellowstone, the actress “respects his decision to follow his dreams.”
“They had many private conversations about the situation and still communicate regularly,” the insider says. “Other people on the show may live to regret their turncoat behavior, but Kelly and Kevin will always be friends.”
