As much as we enjoyed watching Miley Cyrus play Hannah Montana for five (glorious) years, we’re happy to hear that the pop star was eventually able to break free from Disney’s cookie cutter mold. “I did once I was 18 because it felt ridiculous,” Miley, 26, told Elle of her decision to leave the series.

“The minute I had sex, I was kind of like, I can’t put the f–king wig on again,” she continued in the interview published on Thursday, July 11. “It got weird. It just felt like … I was grown up.” Grown up, indeed! When Miley took the iconic role she was just 13 years old.

Since leaving her Hannah Montana roots behind, Miley has actually grown proud of her character’s influence on fans — and her peers in the industry. “I feel like I’m just not ashamed of that anymore,” the award-winning songstress expressed. “It’s pretty cool when you hear Cardi B was listening to Hannah Montana when she was in high school. That s–t makes me happy.” To be honest, it makes us happy, too! Can you imagine Cardi singing along to “See You Again”?

Of course, stepping outside of a role that has come to define you isn’t easy. It took Miley some time to truly change how the world saw her. I tried to go to therapy a few times and they treated me like I was everyone else who sits on the couch,” Miley admitted. “They’d be like, ‘Well, you probably feel paranoid because you’re smoking weed.’ And it’s like, ‘No, I feel paranoid because people are putting little drones in my backyard.’”

As of 2019, Miley confessed that she’s still “trying on identities and seeing what fits.” With that, we’re excited to see her evolution continue in the years to come.
