Prince Harry and Jelly Roll ‘Totally Hit It Off’ in Invictus Promo: The Prince Is ‘Very Inspired’

Prince Harry has a whole lot of time for his unlikely new pal, Jelly Roll, as he lines up the musician to perform at The Invictus Games and plans on milking his new connection for all it’s worth, a source exclusively tells Life & Style.

The red-headed royal, 40, and his new chum, 40, appeared in a promo video for the Games, which celebrates wounded servicemen and helps the athletes recover from injuries, both physical and psychological. The prince looked a bit nervous while he waited for a tattoo in the renowned East Side Ink Tattoo studio in New York City. Jelly Roll – also known by his birth name Jason DeFord – appeared behind him in the clip and, despite some protestations from the prince, proceeded to give the one-time second-in-line a giant neck tattoo that read “I AM” – the Invictus Games’ motto – followed by Jelly Roll’s signature: “I am Jelly Roll.”

Obviously the cheeky video was just a stunt to draw viewers to the charity games, but the on screen chemistry between the rapper and prince seemed very real. According to the insider, the two actually did get along famously.

“Harry had a real blast with him,” the source says. “The whole tattoo thing was just for a promo and would have stayed just that except Harry and Jelly Roll totally hit it off and exchanged numbers and they’ve been chatting back and forth ever since.”

The Games, which will run from February 8 to February 16 in 2025, “offers a recovery pathway for international wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women (WIS). We collaborate to provide opportunities for post-traumatic growth: enabling those involved to reclaim their purpose, identity and future, beyond injury,” according to their official website.

Prince Harry is quoted as saying “The heart of Invictus is the incredible story of competitors brought together through service, who are now united through sport.” He started the event after being inspired by attending a Wounded Warrior Project event in the U.S. in 2013.

With new talent now locked in to perform at the 2025 Games, the source adds that this is just the first step for Harry and Jelly Roll’s newfound friendship.

“Harry’s excited to have Jelly Roll perform at the Invictus Games but this friendship has the potential to be a lot more than just a work thing.”

Harry and wife Meghan Markle ditched their royal duties to become more “normal” celebrities in a sense, which included palling around with Orpah, Tyler Perry and Orlando Bloom, to name a few. With their new friend, the source says that the couple now has a whole new rolodex of famous friends to hang out with.

“Jelly Roll is offering to introduce him and Meghan to lots of other people in the music scene, which is really exciting for both of them,” the insider tells. “Harry is buzzing about it and talking about how talented Jelly Roll is. He thinks the guy’s got an incredible story, he’s very inspired by him and wants to get to know him better.”

Meghan’s looking forward to meeting new people and expanding their circle so it’s a win for both of them.”
