Selena Gomez Is ‘Tired of All the Attacks and the Lies’ Amid Constant Scrutiny Over Her Looks
The shop was nearly empty when they showed up. Selena Gomez and her fiancé, Benny Blanco, made a surprise appearance at the Looney Tunes Record Store in Babylon, New York, to promote their new album, I Said I Love You First, on March 22. “He’s super outgoing and did all of the talking,” a witness exclusively tells Life & Style. “She seemed happy to be there, but tired.”
Some fans noticed other issues, as well. On Instagram, many commented on her appearance at the event. “She seems a little out of it,” wrote one, while others noted that she is “so skinny” and “her face looks weird.” The constant scrutiny has gotten to her, Selena admitted to Jay Shetty on his “On Purpose” podcast, which was posted online on March 24. “The world has become so hard to please. I have really bad days, and sometimes I don’t have the energy to do what I’m doing, but I try 99 percent of the time to be kind and to just be happy and grateful for what I have,” she said, but confessed it can be difficult to stay positive while being criticized for how she behaves, who she dates, what she wears or how much she weighs. “Everyone just has something to say, and it’s really making me sad. I’m not a victim, everyone — I just think it’s made me a tad bitter.”
Selena has grappled with this problem since she was a child star. “Growing up in the public eye with health issues and other personal setbacks, she’s gone through countless highs and lows and she’s tired of all the attacks and the lies,” a source says of the Only Murders in the Building actress, who has revealed that she takes medication for bipolar disorder and the autoimmune disease lupus, which can cause weight fluctuations. “She has struggled with the cycle of comparing herself to others and doubting herself, which really affected her mental and physical health. She’s taking a stand and speaking out about it to help other women going through similar situations.”
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco Ignore Their Haters
Her solution? “I do … ignore most of everything,” Selena, 32, said on the podcast, alluding to her 2017 decision to allow her team to manage all of her social media accounts. “I’m human so of course sometimes I read things, but I don’t have anything on my phone at the moment. So there are ways to combat it. I understand the power of social media, it’s just tricky. ”
It helps that Benny — who declared on the podcast that he doesn’t “care what anyone says” and refuses to “seek validation” from fans or press — “is her biggest cheerleader,” adds the source. The music producer, 37, “makes her feel confident, and he’s brought a sense of peace and stability into her life, which is like a wish come true. Her career is also going great, and she’s tried to implement the lessons she’s learned over the years to stay drama-free and healthy.”
