Sophie Turner Gets Candid About Becoming a Young Mom and Why It’s ‘Really Nice’
Sophie Turner is opening up about navigating motherhood and her career in a candid new interview with The Guardian, published Friday, January 16.
The actress shares daughters Willa, 5, and Delphine, 3, with ex-husband Joe Jonas. Reflecting on starting a family at a young age, Turner, who welcomed her first child at 24 and her second at 26 said, “It’s really nice. I’m not worrying about my biological clock and all that sort of stuff.”
After getting engaged at 21, Turner relocated to the U.S. and started her family soon after. Looking back, she says the experience was both grounding and challenging.
“It just felt like the right break to focus on me, because I’d been a character for so long,” she explained. “Nesting and being at home was amazing. But the flipside of it, and Covid didn’t help, was that this was a big break from the career. And I’ve had to try to rebuild, in a way. You don’t realise how important momentum is in a career, and I stalled it a bit.”
Following her divorce from Jonas two years ago, Turner returned to the U.K. with her daughters as the film industry slowly began to rebound after the pandemic and writers’ strike. “The state of our industry is slowly getting a little bit better, especially in the UK,” she said.
Her latest project, Steal, is especially meaningful to Turner. Filmed in east London, the series feels like a return home, with familiar streets and a distinctly British setting that supports the story’s themes.
In the same interview, Turner, who is set to lead Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series also reflected on portraying love on screen before experiencing it herself.
“A really important part of being an actor is to live a life so you have experiences to draw on,” said Turner, who rose to fame as a teenager playing Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones. “I remember having to act being in love before I’d ever been in love. I thought, ‘OK, I guess I’ll just do this.'”
She added, “And then suddenly, when I’d been in love for the first time, then I knew the feeling. That’s part of the job — to sit in the discomfort of feeling so that we can bring it to the table.”
Turner has also been vocal about her preference for living in her home country. Speaking to Flaunt magazine last year, she said, “I just feel so at home here; I never want to move again.”
“Living in the States, I didn’t appreciate how much you need friends and family and how integral they are to your wellness until you’re away from them,” she continued. “I came back with an abundance of appreciation for them.”
