If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get fit and healthy, well, you’re in luck! Top Chef’s very own Padma Lakshmi spilled some of her go-to tips on how to stay active and eat healthy to Life & Style magazine, on newsstands now.

While the television host, 48, eats about 8,000 calories per day as part of her job, she still manages to stay slim by eliminating things “like alcohol, sugar, wheat, red meat or fried food,” she admitted. Typically, Padma’s main dishes throughout the day may include a sliced boiled egg on sourdough toast with avocado for breakfast, white bean soup with a salad for lunch, and a dinner of “chicken or fish, usually in a coconut milk broth with rice and a ton of vegetables.”

When it comes to working out, the gym is considered her sanctuary. “Honestly, I love the gym. That’s the only time where no one can call me, no one can text me, I don’t have emails, I don’t have anything. It gives me private time,” confessed the star.

She continues to look forward to the ritual partially because she switches up her workout routine, keeping things interesting. Her regimen varies between boxing, weightlifting, pilates, running stairs, and the elliptical. The mom-of-one makes sure to hit the gym “five to six days a week, for at least an hour.”

Her best tip yet is what she does to stay active on the go. “If you can’t do anything else, learn how to jump rope because a jump rope you can always throw in a purse. You can take it anywhere,” she said. Want something simpler? No problem. “If you’re traveling, just do sit-ups, push-ups, and dips on a low table,” she advised. That doesn’t sound too bad. Just make sure you have a good playlist to get started!
