Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers isn’t your typical wellness retreat drama. The TV series, starring Nicole Kidman as a mysterious, not-so-by-the-book guru, follows nine emotionally wrecked guests who check into a high-end resort hoping to fix their lives. But as fans gear up for Season 2, a lot of people are wondering: what is Nine Perfect Strangers actually about?
What Is ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ About?
Nine Perfect Strangers is based on Liane Moriarty’s book by the same name. It’s set at a luxurious but secluded wellness retreat called Tranquillum House, and the series follows nine guests who sign up for a 10-day mind and body transformation. Each one is battling something in their lives, including grief, addiction, marital strife or emotional burnout, and they’re promised healing through a carefully curated program. The retreat is run by Masha Dmitrichenko, whose unconventional methods quickly take a dark and unpredictable turn.
In Nine Perfect Strangers season 1, as the guests began to reveal their secrets, the group dynamic shifted, and they questioned whether they were actually being helped or if Masha had something more nefarious in store. It was a slow burn with psychological tension, and it made viewers question what was real and who could be trusted.
Who Stars in ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’?
Season 1’s ensemble cast included several big names. Along with Kidman as Masha, Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon, Regina Hall, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, Bobby Cannavale and Asher Keddie all starred in roles as guests at the retreat.
Nine Perfect Strangers season 2 is set to introduce a new set of characters and a brand-new setting, turning the show into more of an anthology similar to HBO’s popular White Lotus. While Kidman will return as Masha, she’ll be joined by a cast of fresh faces, including White Lotus alum Murray Bartlett, Liv Ullmann, Henry Golding, Christine Baranski and Dolly de Leon.
However, Kidman revealed that she’s thrilled to be returning in the role of Masha for season 2.
“I think it’s so different from anything I do. There’s such a kind of a mischievous quality to her,” the Practical Magic star said in an interview with Vanity Fair published on April 3, 2025. “She’s not what she seems, which is always a wonderful thing to play.”
Kidman also commented on Masha’s new look in season 2. While Nine Perfect Strangers season 1’s Masha had a very earthy quality, the new season shows her sporting a sleek blonde bob.
“She morphs. She adapts,” Kidman told the publication. “She’s not connected to her physicality in that way — it’s just there either as a portal to something or as a weapon or as a distraction.”
When Does ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Season 2 Come Out?
Hulu first confirmed that Nine Perfect Strangers was returning for a second season in June 2023, and it officially premieres on Hulu on May 21, 2025. The new chapter won’t see the guests in the tropical wellness retreat from season 1. Instead, they’ll be working on their feelings at a swanky resort in the Swiss Alps.
Like the first season, Nine Perfect Strangers season 2 will follow a new group of guests who are struggling to get a handle on certain aspects of their lives as they fall under Masha’s spell and her increasingly questionable methods.
