‘The White Lotus’ Star Carrie Coon Discusses ‘Humiliating’ Hookup and Window Scene in Season 3
Actress Carrie Coon opened up about her The White Lotus character Laurie Duffy’s hookup with Aleksei, played by Julian Kostov, on episode 7 of season 3, discussing how the corporate lawyer was mortified after finding out he was only after her money.
“It’s so humiliating to think that very likely he’s really just after her for that. And that’s crushing,” Carrie, 44, told Vanity Fair in an interview published on Monday, March 31.
After a hot romp with the Russian pal of White Lotus Thailand health mentor Valentin, (Arnas Fedaravičius), Alexsei told Laurie she needed to give him $10,000 to help his sick mother. His multiple demands were cut off when his angry girlfriend banged on his bedroom door, allowing Laurie to escape through a window.
“She had a good time, but it’s really driving home that this whole vacation has been about reflecting on the choices she’s made in her life, especially as they exist relative to her girlfriend’s lives — which, at least on the surface, are much more successful than her own at this point,” Carrie continued about the aftermath of Laurie’s romp with Aleksei.
“And to have that bottom is the place where she can maybe finally start to take a look at what her part is in those choices and maybe take responsibility for some of those choices. Maybe,” The Gilded Age star teased.
Laurie’s pals Jaclyn Lemon (Michelle Monaghan) and Kate Bohr (Leslie Bibb) telling her over dinner that she never takes responsibility for her poor life choices — from a stagnant legal career to her ex-husband — were what drove the character to join Valentin and Aleksei at a Muy Thai fight … which turned out to be yet another bad decision.
Carrie got a chance to provide some much-needed physical comedy to the “Killer Instincts” episode, as Laurie fled Alexsei’s raging girlfriend with a fall to the ground out of his bedroom window.
“I love that stuff. I love stunts,” she told the publication about the scene. “It was a minimal stunt, but I did actually get to do it myself. I went out that window like 10 times. Mike was delighted by that scene because we always see a man do this — we always see a man have to scramble out of a bedroom. You rarely see a woman have to scramble out,” Carrie added about show creator and writer Mike White.
Fans loved Carrie’s window scene, with one user writing on X, “Carrie Coon has been saving each episode with her perfect comedy,” while another added, “Laurie, can’t catch a break! Woman can’t even get laid in peace. Carrie Coon should be in more comedies ’cause this is gold!”
The Gone Girl star had nothing but kind words for Julian, 35, when it came to their sex scene, where both actors appeared naked. Carrie revealed that Julian’s first day on The White Lotus set was when she had her topless scene in the pool after a drunken night of clubbing.
“Julian’s first day of work had been that pool scene, and he had to sort of work backwards from there. And we did this scene a little bit later, so we had gotten to know each other a little bit,” she revealed about the hookup scene. “Whenever you’re doing that intimacy stuff, it’s nice to have a relationship. And he was just lovely and easy and warm, and we just had fun.”
