There’s no denying Todd Chrisleys adorable granddaughter Chloe Chrisley is the best part of Chrisley Knows Best. However, some may wonder why Todd and wife Julie Chrisley have full custody of the young reality star and not her parents, Kyle Chrisley and Angela Johnson.

In 2012, Kyle, whose mother is Todd’s ex-wife, Teresa Terry, welcomed his baby girl with then-girlfriend Angela, but he struggled with drug addiction stemming from mental health issues. “Kyle is bipolar and normally, people that are bipolar, they seek out a way to self-medicate, which is what Kyle has done since he’s been young,” Todd told E! News in 2014. His ex-girlfriend also confirmed Kyle’s drug use and accused Kyle of abusing her during her pregnancy.

Todd first won custody of his granddaughter in 2013 following his eldest son’s arrest, which gave shared custody to the reality TV dad and Chloe’s birth mother. However, in 2016, Angela was arrested for allegedly claiming Chloe as a dependent to defraud Medicaid and food stamps, which led to the real estate mogul gaining full custody.

In 2014, Kyle accused his family multiple times of using Chloe to boost ratings for their reality series. “My dad showed no interest in Chloe at all until the show and until it was pointed out that having a mixed-race child and getting her and all that would be good for his demographic,” he told the Daily Mail at the time. “He didn’t want to see her before then. He said he wanted nothing to do with her.”

Todd denied his son’s claims multiple times. “Chloe is our family, and we are glad that the world gets to see such a beautiful child grow, explore and come into herself so brilliantly through love and respect,” he told Us Weekly.

Following Season 3 of Chrisley Knows Best, Chloe was taken off the show after Kyle threatened to sue the network. “There was no other choice than to pull her from the show,” Todd explained to Radar Online at the time. “At the end of the day, we had to do what was best for Chloe. We did not want to drag her through all this and there was no way that we were going to pay Kyle a penny.”

Kyle’s last run-in with the law was in May 2019. He was arrested in Oklahoma and charged with felony possession of methamphetamine after police found drugs in his car. He was also held for an outstanding open warrant in Dekalb County, Georgia, for the threats he made against his ex Alexus.

A rep for Okmulgee County District Court said the district attorney will not prosecute Kyle and dropped his drug charges in Oklahoma, according to TMZ. As far as his legal battle with Alexus in Georgia, a judge signed off on a warrant for his arrest in 2019 after reviewing his threatening texts, the outlet reported. Kyle was booked for terroristic threats and released on his own recognizance.

Although Kyle and his father were estranged for many years, they made amends in 2019. “I haven’t been the best dad to Chloe, I’ve had a problem with drugs, I’ve acted completely ridiculous and through all that, they have stood by my side,” Kyle wrote via Facebook in August 2019. “Nine months ago, I went to my dad with an apology. His words were: ‘I love you always, and you are forgiven,’ and just like that I was welcomed back into his life with open arms. I will be forever grateful for his love [and] graciousness.”

It looks like Chloe is in very good hands with Todd and Julie!
