In a 2013 interview with Billboard, Justin confirmed the song is about her. “Because at the end of the day, there’s nothing like us, you know? That’s just it. It is what it is. People are going to relate to that,” he said.

So I feel like that’s pretty blatant, it’s whatever,” she said in a 2012 interview with Ryan Seacrest.

After Mac, Ariana began dating Pete Davidson. The two got engaged and during that time, she released a song about him with his name as the title. In a September 2018 episode of SNL, the comedian joked about someday breaking up and coming across this song. “Like, if we break up, and we won’t — we will — but we won’t. But like in 10 years, if God forbid that ever happened, there will be a song called ‘Pete Davidson’ like playing in speakers at Kmart, and I’ll be working there.” They ended up splitting up the following month.
