Demi Lovato’s Trainer Says She “Just Wasn’t Herself” During Workout on the Day Before Her Overdose

While the world was shocked to learn Demi Lovato had been hosptialized due to an overdose on July 24, the people closest to her knew something was wrong. Just one day before the episode, Demi was working out with her Jiu Jitsu trainer Danielle Martin. Now, Danielle reveals that she just “wasn’t herself” when she saw her.

“I’m devastated,” Danielle told Radar. “I’m very close to her.” Danielle has been training with Demi for the past two years, but on Monday she noticed that “something was absent in her spirit.” Demi promised she was just tired, and even asked about meeting up Tuesday, the day she ended up hospitalized. “So you can imagine how I feel when I found out about the overdose,” said Danielle.

Demi seemed to be trying to put on a strong front, but still Danielle “knew something was wrong. The last thing she told me was ‘I love you so much.’”

Demi was clearly proud of her work with Danielle and her achievements in Jiu Jitsu. In January of this year she excitedly revealed on Instagram that she had finally earned a blue belt, which meant she was no longer a beginner-status white belt.

“I first got into jiu-jitsu because I loved watching people grapple,” Demi told Self in 2017. “I think it’s really cool to learn something that helps you with self-defense.” Demi also loved that it kept her on her toes and always felt fresh and new. “Sometimes I get really bored when I do just an hour of cardio, so sometimes I struggle with boredom (laughs). But that’s why I like to train MMA, because it keeps it exciting.” We’re sure once she’s well enough, she’ll turn to MMA to build up her strength once again!
