Love Is Blind’s Joey and Monica Break Up at Wedding During Season 8 Finale: ‘I Deserve to Be Chosen’

Love Is Blind stars Joey Leveille and Monica Danús made it to their wedding during the season 8 finale, though they ultimately called it quits before they said, “I do.”

Throughout the latest season of the Netflix show, fans watched Joey, 36, admit he wasn’t sure if he was ready to marry Monica, 27, at the end of the experiment. However, he promised her that he wouldn’t commit to marriage if he wasn’t 100 percent positive it was the right decision.

The couple was forced to make a final decision about their relationship during the Friday, March 7, finale. After Joey rolled down the aisle on a skateboard, he and Monica were asked if they felt they were ready for marriage.

“I don’t right now. In this moment, it’s both we’re either 100 percent and I just feel like we’re not quite there,” she admitted.

Joey took the news well and said it was OK, and Monica later explained why she felt they weren’t ready. “If Joey had told me with his words, ‘I am 100 percent in, it is you. I know it’s you. I’m certain,’ I feel like it could’ve been a lot different,” she said. “I would have liked a different outcome, but I want to be chosen. I deserve to be chosen.”

“It’s sad that he doesn’t feel as strongly for me as I would hope,” Monica continued. “I was hoping he would be my person for the rest of my life.”

Meanwhile, Joey shared his own theories about why Monica had decided not to marry him. “I think Monica said no because of her family dynamic with her sister. That was a big inhibiting factor for both of us,” he said. “In the physical affection area, I was working on being more physically affectionate for her and I think that could absolutely be part of it. Monica never said I love you specifically until the altar. The first time she said she loved me was up there, actually.”

Monica and Joey sparked a connection when they met in the pods, and they continued to pursue their relationship during the cast trip to Honduras and when they returned to Minneapolis to test out their romance in the real world.

Despite initially seeming like a strong couple, the pair hit many roadblocks leading up to their wedding. Once they returned to Minnesota, Monica’s family expressed concerns about her compatibility with Joey.

While attending a “fam jam,” Monica’s sister, Nicolle, made it clear she wasn’t completely on board with their romance. Joey later suggested that Nicolle’s disapproval stemmed from unresolved issues she had with Monica, seemingly referring to jokes made about her boyfriend secretly still liking Monica. However, Nicolle gave Joey another chance when she offered to take engagement photos from the couple.

In addition to her family’s concerns, Monica expressed feeling disappointed with the lack of physical touch in their relationship. After she and Joey had a conversation about the dilemma, he promised to be more aware moving forward.

While fans now know that Joey and Monica didn’t get married, viewers can find out where they stand today when the Love Is Blind season 8 reunion airs on Sunday, March 9, at 9 p.m. ET.
