Welcome to your skin check-in with Life & Style’s resident health and beauty expert, Dr. Will Kirby, a celebrity dermatologist and Chief Medical Officer of LaserAway. Every week, he’ll be spilling his candid thoughts and professional advice on all things skin, beauty and wellness as it relates to you — and your favorite stars.

She might be bad at love … but she’s good at skincare! This week, I’ll be reviewing music sensation Halsey‘s beauty tutorial. Let’s get started her logical first step: cleansing. I’m not a fan of fancy, expensive washes, so I’m OK with her choice of face washand I really like the fact that she emphasizes the importance of using a gentle cleanser. But then she does the unthinkable! She vigorously dries her face way too harshly with a towel — this could possibly irritate her skin and paradoxically cause extra sebum (oil) production.

After gentle cleaning just let your face dry, pat very, very gently with a clean, cotton cloth or you could even dry your face with a hairdryer set to cold and on the lowest setting. Let’s move on.

Next, Halsey uses a toner and say it’s moisturizing. That doesn’t make much sense, as toners don’t typically don’t work as moisturizers, but she follows it with a hyaluronic acid serum and while I love hyaluronic acid-based products and applaud this category choice, the one she picks is extremely expensive. I’d recommend that you use an equivalent product at a lower cost like HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator.

Halsey briefly references Neutrogena wipes for removing makeup which I love! Another great makeup wipe is City Cloths. She then applies an expensive moisturizer, which, in my professional opinion is a place where you can save money and use a still extremely high-quality moisturizer, but at a much more reasonable price.

At this point, my expertise screeches to a halt as the gorgeous Halsey begins applying makeup. I’m a dermatologist, not a makeup artist … but I still have strong opinions! She first uses her “favorite beauty product”  which is a high-quality lip mask. She rocks skin highlighters, facial concealers, under-eye concealer and then incorporates an E.L.F. eyebrow kit which, as she notes, is great for someone with sparse brows and clocks in at just $4.00! I always love when celebrities pick value products that are readily available. Time to curl some eyelashes and then apply the Beauty Blender foundation which Halsey loves.

Stop the presses! Halsey uses NYX Lip Cream but … under her eyes! It is readily available and not expensive, but I’ve never seen lip cream applied under the eye. Good for her for nontraditional makeup application, thinking outside of the box and channeling her inner David Bowie! She also emotes and I love the vulnerability she displays here.

She transitions to contouring and bronzer and blush and brow gel all leading up to glitter time! She applies glitter and glitter primer expertly. You can never have too much glitter, right? And then, not one but two mascaras are applied: one to darken and one to lengthen! Lipstick, powder, setting powder, and then more lash enhancement via Ardell Wispies.

If Halsey was one of my patients (she isn’t, unfortunately), I might recommend that she address her admittedly thin eyelashes with a prescription lash growth product like Latisse. That said, she does a phenomenal job with her artificial lashes looking nothing short of ravishing after the application.

In the interest of full transparency, I didn’t know a lot about Halsey before reviewing this video. Yeah, I knew a couple of her songs, but I wasn’t necessarily a fan, per se. Well, that just changed! She’s articulate, drop-dead gorgeous and the second I’m done writing this, I’m literally going to purchase her album, Manic. Huge props to her for the revealing look inside her beauty and makeup routine!
