Etiquette Expert Catches Stephen Colbert’s Faux Pa While Talking to Taylor Swift About Her Engagement
Stephen Colbert accidentally broke a long-standing wedding rule while chatting with Taylor Swift — and most fans didn’t even catch it!
During the pop star’s December 10 appearance on The Late Show, Stephen casually congratulated her on her engagement to Travis Kelce … then instantly backtracked. The moment flew by so quickly that viewers hardly noticed anything was off.
But on December 11, etiquette trainer Myka Meier posted a now-viral Instagram video explaining that the host had actually committed — and then corrected — a classic wedding faux pas.
“Okay, who else saw this one?” Myka says in the clip. “This is when Stephen Colbert… says to Taylor Swift on a show, ‘Congratulations on getting engaged.’ And then he quickly realizes that he’s made a faux pot and he actually teaches her wedding etiquette. And he says, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. Because traditionally it’s bad etiquette to say congratulations to a bride because you sort of imply she kind of like got the big one. Congratulations.’”
She continued, “Instead, you’re supposed to say, ‘best wishes’ to the bride-to-be, and then you only say ‘congratulations’ to the couple once they are married. So what do you all think about this? Do we still practice this? Do you think this is old school? What do you think?”
The comment section made it even clearer that most people had no idea this rule existed. One user wrote, “Wow. Never heard of this. And would not have thought ANYTHING if someone said congratulations to me when I got engaged… I think it’s the thought that counts.” Another joked that they learned the rule “from Emily Gilmore on Gilmore Girls.”
Taylor and Travis announced their engagement on August 26 in an adorable joint Instagram post showing the Kansas City Chiefs star proposing in a flower-filled garden. “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨,” they wrote as the caption.
Taylor was glowing during her Late Show appearance — and not just because of the new ring.
“Getting engaged to the love of my life, getting all my music back,” she said. “Those were two things that just might never have happened. They could have just never happened. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, it’s just a matter of time.’”
She added, “Both of those things could have just never arrived in my life, and I’m so grateful for both of those things happening.”
