How Michelle Williams Made Sure Daughter Matilda Grew Up ‘Embracing’ Dad Heath Ledger’s ‘Legacy’
Seventeen years ago, on January 22, 2008, Heath Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment from an accidental prescription drug overdose. Just 28 years old, he already had a reputation as one of the most talented actors in Hollywood, with tour de force performances in films like Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight. Family, friends and fans alike mourned his loss, but Heath’s death was undoubtedly most tragic for his daughter, Matilda, who was only 2 years old at the time.
Even though Heath and Matilda’s mother, Michelle Williams, had broken up the year before his death, the Venom star, 44, has worked hard to keep the late entertainer’s memory alive all these years for Matilda, who turned 19 in October 2024. “Michelle stayed in touch with a lot of Heath’s friends, who have shared stories about what an awesome, inspirational human being he was and the incredible things he accomplished,” an insider exclusively tells Life & Style. “Michelle’s always encouraged that; she wanted Matilda to grow up embracing her father’s legacy.”
They’ve also kept up relationships with members of Heath’s family back in Australia. “His loved ones all adore Matilda and delight in seeing how well-adjusted and mature she is,” adds the insider. “They know Heath would be happy with the person Matilda has become.”
Raising Matilda Away From the Limelight
Of course, Michelle has plenty of stories of her own to tell. “I always say to Matilda, ‘Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes,’” she once shared.
The actress — who’s now married to theater director Thomas Kail, 48, and has two more children — made a huge effort to keep Matilda away from prying eyes. After Heath’s death, Michelle moved from Brooklyn to a farmhouse in upstate New York and established what she’s called “a sane home environment.”
“They’re now spending more time back in Brooklyn but still live a very low-key life,” says the insider, adding that Matilda inherited her dad’s “humble nature.”

“Michelle is so proud of how Matilda has gone about her life and what an intelligent, thoughtful young adult she’s turned out to be,” the source continues.
Though he’s been gone for nearly two decades, Heath is still very much a part of Matilda’s world, too. “Sometimes it feels like he’s this guardian angel figure watching over her and helping her navigate her way through things with his spirit,” notes the insider, adding, “Matilda is honored whenever someone says she looks or acts like Heath.”
In fact, Matilda is a living embodiment of so much of what made Heath special. As Michelle’s said: “Every time I really miss [Heath] and wonder where he’s gone, I just look at her.”
