Jennifer Garner Rewears ’13 Going on 30′ Dress for Halloween to Celebrate Film’s 20th Anniversary
Thirty, flirty and thriving … again! Jennifer Garner recreated her iconic getting ready scene from 13 Going on 30, complete with the same dress from the film, for Halloween in celebration of the movie’s 20th anniversary.
Though 13 Going on 30 turned 20 years old in April, this year marks the 2004 romantic comedy’s “20th Halloween,” which Jen, 52, honored in a video shared via Instagram on Wednesday, October 30. The actress filmed herself wearing her blue butterfly necklace from the movie, as well as her bold green and blue oval-shaped ring, as she did her skincare routine and makeup look in a white robe. Jen even included a hilarious clip of herself holding up a pair of shapewear shorts with a confused look on her face, similar to her character’s expression as she discovered a thong for the first time.
Finally, the video cut to a clip of Jen reentering the room in the same striped dress she wore for the party scene in 13 Going on 30. However, she made a few adjustments to the look, swapping out her character’s heels for a pair of calf-high white socks and bright pink sneakers and her pink clutch for a brown crossbody bag. The Yes Day star did a cute twirl and popped her booty out for the camera before heading out the door.
“Happy 20th Halloween, Jenna Rink,” Jen captioned the video, which was set to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”
Fans shared how much they loved the look in the comments.
“And you haven’t aged a day!” one user wrote.
“Love it. The glasses putting on the eyeliner is the best,” another user commented.
Many people shared references to 13 Going on 30, which has become a cult classic through the years, in response to Jen’s costume.
“Please tell me there are Razzles in your purse,” one person wrote, while another user added, “Now we just need the Thriller dance!”
13 Going on 30 follows 13-year-old Jenna Rink (played by Christa B. Allen), who wants nothing more than to be 30, flirty and thriving. She gets her wish and is transformed into a 30-year-old woman overnight (played by Jen), but Jenna quickly realizes that being an adult comes with a whole new set of challenges, and she doesn’t want to grow up as quickly as she once thought.
The striped dress has become a symbol of the movie, as Jenna wears it to her first big party as an adult woman. She dances to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as a way to get everybody else on the dance floor.
Many fans have been hoping for a sequel to 13 Going on 30 for years. While no plans for a second installment or reboot film have come about, the original film writers, Joshua Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, are adapting the movie into a musical that will begin in September 2025, according to Playbill. The music will be written by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner. Casting has not yet been announced.
“For us, the musical is the best version of it right now, for sure. A new version of it,” Joshua, 54, told The Hollywood Reporter in April while discussing whether 13 Going on 30 would have a sequel film or follow-up series.
“Something that just really left me feeling great about the movie is that there are these emotional moments that translate into song,” Cathy, 53, said. “It retouched me about the movie and the tone in a way that translates into an emotional musical.”
