It’s the most wonderful time of the year… especially for John Legend’s precious kiddos. So much so, that the singer recently opened up about the differences in how he used to celebrate the holidays as a child versus how he and wife Chrissy Teigen celebrate with Luna, 2, and Miles, 5 months.

“I can’t even imagine what it’s like to be a kid like my kids, because I grew up in a house where it was very different,” he told Heat magazine. “My parents were working class. My dad worked in a factory and we couldn’t afford a lot,” the EGOT winner said. “We couldn’t afford to have these huge Christmas celebrations with big gifts. It was all about family, it was about music, [and] it was about food — but it wasn’t about material things at all,” John continued.

The 39-year-old went on to reveal how this disparity affects him as a father. “It’s weird raising kids that are having very much the opposite experience, where they’re surrounded by privilege and wealth, and don’t want for anything,” John admitted. “It’s hard to know how to deal with Christmas with them.”

Don’t get it twisted, though! John and Chrissy certainly aren’t raising spoiled Hollywood brats. “I don’t think we need to go extra with Christmas. They get so many gifts anyways because brands send us free stuff all the time,” the proud papa explained. “Everyday we get new stuff. A lot of it we just give away. I don’t think we’ll spoil them any more for Christmas. We’ll just try to keep it at a normal level,” John said.

To be fair, when your daddy gets his own Christmas TV special, nothing about your holiday could possibly be “normal.” However, it’s heartwarming to see John and Chrissy instilling positive, modest values in little Luna and baby Miles.
